Seven new GPS navigation systems from Magellan

Magellan today announced its new Magellan RoadMate portable automobile navigation family. As of this moment we don’t have product images but we’ll update as soon as we get our hands on them.

The new models are the following:

  • RoadMate 2210 – 4.3 inch
  • RoadMate 2210T – 4.3 inch with Lifetime Traffic Alerts
  • RoadMate 2220-LM – 4.3 inch with Lifetime Map Updates (up to four times a year)
  • RoadMate 2230T-LM – 4.3 inch with Lifetime Map Updates and Lifetime Traffic Alerts
  • RoadMate 5220-LM – 5 inch with Lifetime Map Updates
  • RoadMate 5230T-LM – 5 inch with Lifetime Map Updates and Lifetime Traffic Alerts

The prices range from $100 to $170 and all new Magellan RoadMate’s are preloaded with maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

What’s interesting with the new Magellan series is that it’s going to use – in addition to traditional street names – landmarks as guidance. Such as “turn left at the gas station” or any other easily visible landmark such as banks, etc.

The new models also feature traffic camera alerts which you get for free in the first year. You also have the junction view feature which lets you look at busy intersections in a way so you don’t panic and drive off to the side of the road.

Another new feature is the integration of bestparking.com which can help you easily find a parking spot. You also get speed limit assist and AAA TourBook content.

Magellan reveals RoadMate 9020

Some of it’s features include free lifetime traffic updates, highway lane assist, built-in AAA TourBook, text-to-speech, multi-destination routing. It comes with maps of United States, Canada and Puerto Rico pre-installed.

Magellan RoadMate 9020 is priced at $270.

Magellan RoadMate 3065 Commuter

Magellan is trying to convince people that they need a GPS navigation system even when they’re just commuting. Their flagship model is the new Magellan RoadMate 3065 Commuter which we’ve been following at Navigadget (here and here).

Magellan RoadMate 3065 Commuter has a relatively large 4.7″ screen which has features like traffic wakeup, lifetime traffic alerts, highway lane assist, OneTouch favorites, AAA TourBook, periodic reporting and Bluetooth.

Traffic Wakeup is when Magellan RoadMate 3065 Commuter will wake itself up 30 minutes before your commute to start gathering traffic information. When you’re ready get the heck out of work your GPS navigation system is already loaded with the latest traffic alerts and ready with the optimal route for your commute.

The MSRP is $200 but you can pick it up on Amazon for about $170 though.

Magellan RoadMate 3065

Magellan RoadMate 3065 must be coming out shortly in the U.S. since it just made it through FCC. One of the biggest features that puts RoadMate 3065 ahead of the others is that it can “wake up” at a preset time to download traffic information for you so you can make a more advised decision at the beginning of your trip rather than during.

However it sounds like this is going to be a premium feature yet we still don’t know how much it will cost or how it will download traffic data. What do you think? 3G or WiFi? – I mean your garage is possibly is in your home WiFi range – that could work most of the time…

giveaway: Magellan iPhone car kit

We know you’ve been waiting for this one. We’re giving away (that means free) a Magellan iPhone car kit that we reviewed couple of weeks ago.

This truly is a multi talented car kit. First off it has its own GPS receiver. What does that do you might ask? Faster satellite fix, and the ability to use your iPhone as a GPS navigator when no cell towers are around to help you out. Secondly it has an amplified noise canceling speakerphone. It has bluetooth to pair up with your iPhone and of course charges your iPhone too. Oh it also plays well with your case whether it’s hard shell or silicon.

The best part is Magellan iPhone car kit can be used with any GPS navigation app for the iPhone. You don’t have to buy Magellan’s own app but when we reviewed them as a combo we were quite pleased with it.

Here’s what you need to do: 1) subscribe to our RSS feed and then 2) leave a comment below. That is all. Do make sure you enter a valid email so we can contact you back.

We will ship this out to a U.S. address only. Sorry rest of the world. Also duplicate entries, emails, IP addresses will be disqualified.

We’ll close this article for comments a week from today and after that we’ll announce the winner.

Good luck.

magellan iPhone car kit review

We recently received the Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone or iPod Touch (compatible with iPhone 3G and 3GS or iPod Touch2G). We knew we were going to like it immediately upon opening, as it went from the box to mounted on the windshield in less than 2 minutes. After installing the Magellan RoadMate app for iPhone, we were off! (A somewhat lengthy download and install process, but one that is well worth the wait.) Using these two together – Magellan Premium Car Kit + Magellan RoadMate app – has at least one notable benefit; the Car Kit has a built-in GPS receiver, enhancing the performance of the RoadMate app. While we didn’t test with the iPod Touch, clearly the Car Kit is a valuable and compatible mate. Unlike the iPhone, the iPod Touch does not have any GPS capabilities of it’s own. Combined with the Magellan Premium Car Kit, your iPod Touch becomes a navigation tool.
