TomTom navigation coming to Android

We hear TomTom GPS navigation app that just came out for the iPhone will be available for the Android platform – even though no release date were mentioned.

During this mini interview with VP for TomTom, Benoit Simery said their app would come out for Android – since HTC is such a solid device but people on S60 and Blackberry would have to wait a little longer.

There was no indication of TomTom working on a hardware platform of their own – and they still think a standalone GPS navigation systems will be with us for years to come.

Oh yeah – we shopped the above image.

CoPilot Live for Android

ALK Technologies just announced recently that their CoPilot Live GPS navigation system is now available for Android phones. You can already grab it from Android Market for your HTC Magic, HTC Dream or the new HTC Hero – for only $35.

With CoPilot the maps are stored locally on the phone, rather than relying on wireless internet which can be quite slow at times. However there are still some “Live” which utilizes the mobile Internet connection such as real-time traffic alerts, 5-day weather forecast information and a new location sharing service called CoPilot LiveLink.

Here are some features of CoPilot Live for Android:

  • Scrolling menus and maps supports touch screen gesture recognition
  • Turn-by-turn voice directions
  • Widescreen portrait or landscape mode
  • CoPilot LiveLink location sharing
  • Direct dialling to POIs, location sending via text and photo navigation
  • Safety camera alerts with free database updates

Verizon just introduced a new smartphone called HTC OZONE. It offers 3G network support, Wi-Fi, and a qwerty keyboard. It comes with a 1500mAh battery which means it will hang in there with you on those long business trips. It even comes with international charging adapters.

HTC Ozone does feature a GPS receiver and lets you use the VZ Navigator which costs $10/month. census to geotag your front door

Did you know that the 2010 census will be collecting GPS coordinates of every one of 110 million residence in the U.S.? To be more precise, the aforementioned data is probably already collected and will be used next year to help census workers get to your house. We even know what kind of gadget they’re going to use. It is a ‘data only’ device from Harris company – manufactured by HTC called HTC Census which integrates GPS, EVDO and WiFi connectivity as well as some sort of special census software.

What do you think about your name, address, and latitude longitude all linked to each other sitting in a government database?

How long does it take a drone plane to fly over to any part of the country to snap a centimeter resolution image of your house?
