Nikon CoolPix AW100 GPS camera review

Nikon’s CoolPix AW100 is one of the cameras we talked about in our compare GPS digital cameras article. The price has gone down on this camera to $300 right now and that’s pretty good deal for a waterproof camera with GPS technology.

So we decided to look around the web for some user review snippets and found these:
Pros:

  • lightweight and small
  • quick between shots
  • GPS does not waste power
  • higer ISO photos are clear
  • good battery life
  • vibration reduction works really well

Cons:

  • complicated menus
  • waterproofness needs to be serviced yearly
  • poor zoom performance when in video mode

FujiFilm FinePix F770EXR with GPS

Fujifilm just recently introduced the FinePix F770EXR which will be available in March 2012 for $380. The most outstanding feature for us is of course the GPS capabilities of this camera. In addition F770EXR features 16MP EXR-CMOS, 20x optical zoom, 1.5 seconds start up time, and 1 second between shots.

As far as the GPS features, FujiFilm FinePix F770EXR has a route log, where the camera creates a map showing where you’ve been and photo navigation which shows the distance and direction to the place a certain photo was taken. You can record and edit your favorite places in the camera, and even tell you what nearby landmarks are and their distance.

Some other specs:

  • 3.0-inch LCD with 460,000 dots and Monitor Sunlight mode
  • Full 1080p HD movie
  • ISO 100 – 12800
  • RAW file capture (FinePix F770EXR only)

More than a year ago we put together a list of the best GPS digital cameras. New models come out all the time so it’s time for another comparison.

A new brand that made it to our list this year is Canon with their Canon PowerShot SX230 and Canon PowerShot S100. Canon took it’s time to integrate GPS positioning to it’s point and shoot models but they’ve made a good entrance since SX230 is the most popular of all. SX230 comes in two vibrant colors and regular black. It has a pop up flash which may get in the way if you’re not used to it. It can take 1080p HD videos and features a 3″ LCD screen. It will still fit in a pocket but it may have to be a good sized one. PowerShot S100 also comes with integrated GPS but it is the most expensive in the pack and possibly the smallest. S100 comes with the latest Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor and only 5x digital zoom.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is the successor of last year’s Sony DSC-HX5V. Only better and less expensive just like most electronics. Sony again impresses with its G lens and the “Exmor R” CMOS image sensor. Some other cool features in addition to the GPS capability of course is the Backlight Correction HDR, and the ability to take 3D stills.

Panasonic is on the list again with a successor – the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8. Once again they’re boasting about the new high-quality LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens system. It also has the AF Tracking system which tracks a subject until you hit the shutter. At only $150 this may be one of the best deals you can get if you’re looking for a GPS digital camera.

Nikon Coolpix is also back with Nikon COOLPIX AW100. This camera is waterproof, can shoot 1080p HD videos, and geotags your photos as expected. A little pricey at about $350 but if you’re looking to take photos at 30ft below surface under water, then this is your pick. It also looks pretty slick for being such a rugged GPS digital camera.

Another new brand on our list is Fujifilm. They’ve brought the Fujifilm FinePix F600EXR into the play this year. It is quite bulky but it is packed with features. It also has a pop up flash and promises to take motion blurs out of your photos with mechanical image stabilization, high ISO sensitivity and the new Motion Detection capability. The 15x optical zoom covers 24-360mm which is 35mm equivalent.

Olympus TG-810 is not pretty to look at but it’s waterproof down to 10 meters, shockproof, freeze proof down to 14F, and crushproof up to 220lbs. It will photos at 14 MP resolution through a lens with 5x wide optical zoom, and has 3″ 920K LCD.

Samsung’s new entry this year is the Samsung EC-SH100. It’s the lightest point and shoot GPS digital camera out there weighing at only 3.8 ounces. It is also cheapest with the price at low $100′s. In addition it is the only one on this list with WiFi capability for instant sharing. Not a bad camera at all. This has to be your pick if you’re after the cheapest digital camera.

Last but not least is the Casio EX-H20GBK. It has 14.1MP resolution, can take videos at 720p which is not as good as the others. It has a 3″ LCD and a long lasting battery that can take up to 600 shots. This last one is the only one we’re not really recommending.

There’s a lot more but we thought these were worth mentioning. If you feel strongly about another model do let us know and we’ll consider.

Canon PowerShot S100 packs GPS

Canon last week added a new point shoot camera to its PowerShot range with PowerShot S100. The new Canon PowerShot S100 is a very compact camera with DSLR-like manual control and superb image quality low light. S100 is a successor to S90 and S95 and adds enhanced HS System, which combines a Canon high-sensitivity sensor with DIGIC 5.

Some other features include 24mm ultra-wide angle with 5.0x optical zoom lens, Image Stabilizer (IS), and more fun than any of this: the GPS functionality. With the newly added GPS feature you can record the time and location of every shot.

Pentax new O-GPS1

Pentax just announced the new O-GPS1, a new GPS enabled geotagging unit that is designed to work with Pentax SLR units. O-GPS1 sits on the hotshoe and lets you record GPS coordinates and the time photo was captured. In addition it can even keep track of which direction you were facing when you took the shot. All of this works with Google Maps giving you the chance to see your photos on a map.

The fun part though is the AstroTracer function. It only works with the K-5 or K-r camera bodies and it couples with the Shake Reduction system to let you shoot celestial bodies.

The unit can calculate the movement of stars, planets, and other bodies using the latitude obtained from GPS data and the camera’s alignment data (horizontal and vertical inclinations and aspect) obtained from its magnetic and acceleration sensors, then shifts the camera’s image sensor in synchronization with the movement of the objects.*** As a result, stars and other bodies are captured as solid points rather than blurry streaks, even during extended exposures.

That’s not all though. Pentax O-GPS1 even offers a simple navigation function to let you find location of photos you’ve taken or you’ve marked on your computer.

Sony HX9V gets GPS

Sony just made official the new 16.2MP Cyber-shot digital still camera called Sony HX9V. DSC-HX9V offers a high-performance G Lens with 16x optical zoom with 24mm wide angle. The camera allows for creating 3D content either in 3D Sweep Panorama mode or the 3D Still Image mode. In this mode, the camera takes two consecutive shots in different focus positions to calculate the depths, and then it creates left-eye and right-eye images to produce a 3D effect.

But better than the fake 3D feature Sony HX9V offers GPS/Compass which should become useful on your travel and holidays. The embedded GPS receiver along with the e-compass will capture your location and even shooting direction and lets you view them overlayed onto a map from your PC.

The HX9V replaces the HX5V which we mentioned in our best GPS digital camera article (getting an update soon).

HX9V will be available in April but you can preorder starting in February. DSC-HX9V will cost $350.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TS3: another digital camera with GPS

Panasonic also announced the new rugged LUMIX DMC-TS3 today. It does 12.1MP photos, 1920×1080 full HD videos, has a super rugged look and design which protects it from water up to 12 meters deep, drops from 2 meters, and will function at temperatures down to -10C. But more importantly than all these LUMIX DMC-TS3 has a built-in GPS function, a compass, altimeter and even barometer. You can use this camera not only to take photos, but also to figure where you’re going and where you’ve been.

Just like the ZS10 we mentioned TS3 can also show the name of the country/region/town you’re in including about 1 million landmarks from all over the world. LUMIX TS3 also comes with an internal clock that automatically adjusts to the local time when GPS is enabled.

Wait until March 2011 to get your hands on one of these. We’re guessing low $400′s. What do you think?

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS10: digital camera with GPS

Panasonic today announced LUMIX DMC-ZS10 – a digital camera with ultra wide-angle to long zoom. Not being experts in digital photography we’ll just go ahead and list some features but then we’ll jump into the fun parts such as as the embedded GPS receiver.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS10 has a 24mm ultra-wide-angle and 16x optical zoom with LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens. It can capture full-HD videos as 1920×1080, has a 3″ touch LCD which allows zooming and focusing, and even acts as a shutter.

As we already mentioned LUMIX ZS10 also features a built-in GPS receiver that lets you geotag your photos. It will automatically tag the location data where the photo was taken with its latitude and longitude in the Exif data.

Just like most other GPS embedded digital cameras LUMIX ZS10 also shows the name of the place you’re in whether it is the country, city, or town. This database covers 203 countries or regions for global users. It also knows about more than 1 million landmarks in 78 countries.

Another neat feature that comes with GPS is that the camera can adjust to the local time automatically.

The LUMIX ZS10 will be available in March 2011. There’s no information on pricing just yet. The LUMIX ZS10 will be available in black, red, blue, silver, and brown.

Fujifilm F550EXR does GPS geotagging

FUJIFILM announced an addition to the FinePix F-Series lineup: the FinePix F550EXR. This is a compact digital camera with a new 16MP EXR-CMOS sensor, FUJINON 15x super Wide-Angle lens (24-360mm equivalent) and 3.0” with 160° viewing, high speed shooting capabilities, full HD movie capture at 1080p, and finally new GPS Geo-Tagging.

We don’t have too much expertise in digital imaging so we’ll leave that to the pros, but as far as the GPS capabilities for F550EXR you’re looking at a local database of place names stored on the device so it can tag your photos with names by matching it with your location. It also obviously stores latitude and longitude and can overlay your photos on a map with the included software.

Fujifilm F550EXR knows about half a million points of interests around the world by name. The Photobook Assist feature will let you create a book of places you’ve visited where you can turn the pages using the screen on the camera.

In addition, if you take a picture and don’t remember where you took it you can have the F550EXR guide you back to it. It can show you which direction to walk and how far you’re from it. F550 EXR’s GPS Tracking Data function stores location data at regular intervals and when you’re in front of your PC this information can be turned into a map illustrated with the pictures you took along the way.

The FinePix F550EXR will be available in mid-March 2011 for $350.

FinePix XP30 GPS Camera from Fujifilm

At CES 2011 FUJIFILM just announced FinePix XP30, a rugged digital camera with GPS Geo-tagging functionality. XP30 is waterproof to 5 meters and shockproof up to 1.5meters. It will work in cold temperatures down to -10°C.

XP30 has 14MP CCD sensor, a 2.7″ LCD, FUJINON 5x wide angle refractive optical zoom lens; all housed in a metal uni-body chassis for durability. XP30 comes in black, green and orange.

The GPS Geo-Tagging feature not only tell you where you are in the world, but also display this information as longitude and latitude or by place name. FinePix XP30 already knows about half a million places of interest across the globe. When you take a photo the image is tagged with location information.

There’s even a feature called Photo Navigation where the camera will tell you which direction to go and how far in case you can’t remember where you took the photo. XP30 will also draw a map of where you’ve been with its GPS Tracking Data function. Turn this on and the camera will regularly record your location data and when you’re back home this information can be turned into a map illustrated with the pictures you took along the way. Pretty cool.
