You’re looking at a shiny new Garmin Approach G6 GPS golf device. Here’s the scoop:

  • MSRP is $300
  • preloaded with over 25,000 worldwide courses
  • weighs just over 3 ounces
  • 2.6” sunlight readable display
  • offers layup arcs that are drawn on the map
  • battery lasts up to 15 hours

Too expensive? Older models, such as Approach G3 and Approach G5 must be a whole lot cheaper by now. Too big? Check out Garmin Approach S1 which is just a wrist watch.

SWAMI 3000 GPS for golf

If you’re into golf, you have to checkout the Swami 3000 GPS unit. At only $99 it seems like a steal compared to other GPS devices for golf. This is the newer model of the older Swami 1500 and even though its product page isn’t all that glorious it does have a solid set of features:

Callaway upro mx: GPS for golfing

Callaway just introduced a brand new GPS device for golfers. It is called Callaway upro mx. The device features a full-color multi-gesture touch screen that measures 2.2″ giving you plenty of screen while still remaining portable. To make navigation easier they also have something called “optical finger navigation system” but we don’t know about this “technology” to comment on it just yet.

There’s something called ProMode that offers enhanced feature set, including TV-style video flyovers for each hole layout, and AnyPoint Technology, which provides golfers accurate distances from any location on the golf course. available for an additional fee.

Callaway upro mx will be available in May for $200 which isn’t too bad. There are no annual fees unless you want to go pro. upro website still has no information on the upro mx.

iPlay GPS Sonocaddie V500

South African iPlay GPS came out with a new GPS device for golfers called Sonocaddie V500. It is probably good timing on their part as the Southern Hemisphere is about to start enjoying their summer if they haven’t already done so.

Anyways one of the highlights for this new GPS for golfers is that in addition to showing your yardage to front, center, and back of green, iPlay GPS Sonocaddie V500 can also show your distance to anywhere on the course with its touchpoint positioning.

The product actually promises two new features not found on any other device. These would be the ability to get a satellite image of the hole, and also a video flyover. However iPlay was unable to deliver these features on their because of lack of data. But they promise when the data is available you’ll have access to these great features.

Garmin Approach S1: GPS watch for golfers

Garmin keeps going after golfing market with a new sleek looking GPS enabled wrist watch designed to help golfers on the course. The new GPS watch is called Garmin Approach S1 and it costs about $250 on their site.

The really nice thing with the Approach S1 is that it comes preloaded with over 14000 courses so more thank likely it is ready to be used right out of the box. It shows which hole you’re on and displays yardage to front, middle, and back of the green. Other features include the ability to measure individual shot distances, and also act as an everyday life when you’re not on the course.

As far as hardware specs Approach S1 weighs only 1.8 ounces but still is rugged and waterproof, and has an ultra-thin backlit display, with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can last about 8 hours in GPS mode and up to three weeks in regular watch mode.

AG1 combines automotive and golf GPS

AG1 is a brand new GPS navigation system announced by Expresso today. It can be used as a regular car GPS navigation system to get turn by turn driving directions or as a golf range finder which includes more than 33000 courses around the world. In addition it includes a media player for your tunes and videos. We don’t know how much it will cost as “where to buy” section of their website is still under construction.

AG1 has an automatic portrait and landscape function, 3.6″ TFT LCD touchscreen, battery that can last up to 10 – 12 hours, built in stereo speakers, and two SD card slots that allows up to 64GB of storage.

The car navigation system portion of AG1 is done via collaboration with NAVIGON while the golfing part of the device is integrated with help from iGolf.

golf app on iPad by Terra Imaging

If you were waiting to see if they would make an iPad app for golfing you’re in luck. You may see the new 3D Golf Course Navigation System in a golf cart at your favorite golf course soon. Developers say the beautiful screen and the compact size make the new iPad perfect for golf carts (we agree!)

What’s interesting is that they decided to add an external Leica GPS antenna to the iPad even though iPad itself carries an A-GPS receiver. This could be for several reasons though. First, Terra Imaging probably plan on using their 3D golf course mapping software on iPad with WiFi only (which we know won’t have GPS), second they’re partners with Leica and just need a reason to use their hardware, and third maybe they actually just need a more powerful GPS receiver.

SkyCaddie SGX GPS range finder

SkyGolf is announcing a brand new GPS enabled rangefinder called SkyCaddie SGX.

SkyCaddie SGX has a 3″ transflective LCD screen, Lithium-ion battery that can last up to 14 hours, offers up to 30,000 pre-loaded and ground-verified maps. It can automatically rotate the green to match a golfer’s angle of approach and provides all of the distances needed to hit greens – and many more features we’re not too familiar with.

But anyhow, the SkyCaddie SGX will be available in April 2010 for a suggested price of $400.

garmin software for golfers

Garmin has a new stat-tracking software for their handheld GPS device for golfers – Approach G5. It is a free upgrade for G5 owners and it helps you keep track of fairways hit, greens hit in regulation, putts per round and how far they hit each club.

How does it work? Well, after every tee shot, Approach G5 asks if you hit the fairway. It also gives you the option of measuring how far you hit every shot. If you’re crazy about stats you can also put in which club you used to get an average for that club later on. You have to enter your score for each hole, and your presented with the option to tally your putts per round and the number of greens you hit in regulation.

Garmin Approach G3 already on Amazon

Garmin just announced is new handheld GPS device for golfers. It is called Garmin Approach G3 and tries to make the sport affordable for everyone. With the new Approach G3 you’ll have access to over 12K golf courses in the U.S. which are already loaded. It costs $350, which is about $9 cheaper than it is bigger brother Garmin Approach G5 as far as Amazon is concerned. We’re hoping Amazon price of Garmin Approach G3 will come down a bit to make price difference between G5 and G3 more logical. But do keep in mind the list price for Approach G5 is still $450.

Approach G3 is a very capable device with a 2.6″ touch screen, that can last up to 15 hours on a pair of AA batteries.
