DeLorme inReach two-way satellite communicator
Jun 15, 2011 delorme, gps navigation, gps satellites

This is DeLorme’s new two-way satellite GPS communicator. It is called DeLorme inReach and this device you see up here works on it’s own, with DeLorme PN-60W, or with any Android smartphone. It gives you global coverage using the Iridium satellites.
One of the biggest advantages of having two-way connectivity when you’re out in the wilderness (and in serious trouble) is that once you request emergency help you’ll get a feedback from search and rescue services telling you that they’re on their way.
Straight from DeLorme’s blog:
When using the device as a standalone, you will be able to send tracking locations as well as three different messages you’ve created ahead of time. SOS messages can be sent to search and rescue and they’ll be able to respond by triggering a change in the SOS LED on the inReach device to let you know that they heard you and are taking action.
Pairing the DeLorme inReach with either a PN-60w or an Android device allows you to type up to 160 characters and send your message to friends and family using either e-mail or SMS text message addresses. Don’t worry about building your contact list ahead of time anymore, you can send messages to new addresses right in the field. Communicate important information, change your plans, or just check in to let everyone know that you are okay. Send your message to Twitter and Facebook or a shared map to let them watch your progress and send you a message.
Here are some other details – You’ll have to wait until October to get a DeLorme inReach. It will cost you $250. The cheapest messaging plan is $10/month and you’ll need at least one year of service. The device is IPX7 waterproof and it floats. Battery tests are still in progress but the device has shown the ability to send messages up to 7 days. Lot’s of other details here.

DeLorme Earthmate PN-40
Jun 25, 2008 delorme, gps navigation

DeLorme just announced Earthmate PN-40, their latest handheld GPS device which boasts a speedy dual core processor, a new GPS receiver chipset, and spacious 500MB internal flash memory which can be extended upto 32GB thanks to the SDHC card support.
Expected to hit the market as early as fall of this year Eartmate PN-40 really focused on delivering high speed map redraws…
As an example, I’ve been driving with high resolution color aerial imagery displayed on my device and have been tracking at a scale of 80 ft (very high detail) and haven’t noticed any lag time in map redraws… and that was traveling over 40 mph. While the color aerial imagery was impressive on the PN-20, I was never satisfied with the redraw time for imagery when traveling much faster than an average bike ride.
Here are the rest of the features:
- Super high-sensitivity 32-channel Cartesio chipset by STMicroelectronics delivers near-instantaneous signal acquisition and ConstantLock™ satellite retention
- Dual-core processor for rapid screen re-draws, even with large aerial imagery files
- 500 MB of onboard Flash memory (1 GB total hard drive)
- 3-axis electronic compass with included accelerometer performs when held in any position—while in motion or standing still
- Sensitive barometric altimeter for reliably accurate altitude readings
- Supports SDHC high-capacity SD cards—32 GB or higher
- USB 2.0 data transfer to internal memory or SD card in device
- More detailed onboard base map data for the U.S., now with secondary and connector roads (along with major highways and thoroughfares for the entire world)
- 2.2″ 65K-color daylight-readable TFT screen for clarity in any light conditions
- Topo USA 7.0 software with complete U.S topo and street maps included—no extra purchase required. Also displays USGS 7.5-min quads, aerial imagery, and NOAA nautical charts via online download from DeLorme

Street Atlas USA 2009
Apr 7, 2008 delorme, gps navigation, gps software

DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 debuted today with its Teseo chipset and 3D cockpit view which also marked the announcement of Street Atlas USA 2009 DVD and Street Atlas USA 2009 PLUS DVD. Both versions, as well as LT-40 GPS receiver support UMPC’s says DeLorme which is nothing more than saying “this camera supports YouTube”.
However there are some real new features one of which being the NavMode option. NavMode has a more sleek GUI and offers a 3D view. In addition, the LT-40 has something called a ConstantLock Signal Retention where signals as weak as -159dBm are routinely acquired and maintained without sacrificing positional accuracy while STMicroelectronics’ and DeLorme’s Kalman filtering maintains its fix even amid tall buildings, and in high radio frequency (RF) areas.
Street Atlas USA 2009 DVD is already available for sale for $70 and Street Atlas USA 2009 PLUS DVD for $100.

LT-40 will be available this April for $70 but it will also include Street Atlas USA 2009 which predicts where new roads will be built in the next year. The software also has some nice features such as responding to voice commands, and giving voice directions including pronouncing street names.
