Published on April 2nd, 2008 in gps navigation, phones, samsung

Samsung Instinct was just introduced by Sprint at CTIA today. Instinct supports CDMA EV-DO Rev A networks at 800MHz and 1900MHz, features a really sharp 3.1″ TFT LCD haptic touch screen at 240×432 resolution, and comes with a 2GB microSD card that is upgradeable to 8GB.

Other features include 2MP digital camera, video recording and streaming, bluetooth, and a full internet browser.

Oddly enough the specs page says “two standard 1000mAh Li-Ion batteries” where each one can give you 5.75 hours of talk time.

Then there’s the GPS navigation of course. No stand alone GPS receiver though, A-GPS.

g810-samsung.jpg
We already told you about this Samsung G810 a few days earlier but now we have a much nicer photo and more details.

The software for GPS navigation is very similar to the one on i550 and i560 and Google Maps 2.0 comes pre-installed and work with the on board GPS receiver.

G810 has a dedicated button for activating the GPS software which in this case is Navigon 6.27. Just like Nokia is doing with their maps - with Samsung all you get is a two week trial version after which you’ll have to pay about 60 € for route calculations and voice guidance.

Also check out this extended review of G810 which talks about all the navigation software in detail and provides photos taken with the 5MP camera and 3x optical zoom.

GPS on Samsung SGH-i780

Published on November 17th, 2007 in gps navigation, phones, samsung

Samsung SGH-i780 has been on Navigadget before. Today we have a video from unwired about the A-GPS functionality on this device.

A-GPS improves the performance of GPS receivers by providing them with data that they would ordinarily have to download from the GPS satellites. With A-GPS data, GPS receivers can operate faster and more reliably. To make use of the A-GPS functionality though the phone radio needs to be turned on which means you can’t use it in flight mode.

A nice feature is that Samsung SGH-i780 will actually let you know if the A-GPS receiver is in use or not.

The video shows how Google Maps makes use of the information obtained by the A-GPS receiver.
