Nokia N810

Published on April 2nd, 2008 in gps navigation, nokia

Nokia N810 that finally introduced a GPS into the mix was just made official with the WiMAX technology which is the wide-area high-speed mobile networks.

N810 is mainly an internet device that can allow for download speeds of up to 2-4 Mbps per user with peak download speeds of up to 10 Mbps. Unlike Wi-Fi which have a range of a few hundred feet, WiMAX networks consist of a number of interconnected base stations, each with a radius of up to 2-3 miles, that allow for handoffs from one base station to another as users move about a region or metro area.

In addition to the full featured web browser that takes full advantage of the large 4.13 inch touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a variety of popular web-based services are also supported such as:

  • Skype
  • Google Talk
  • Rhapsody
  • Gizmo5, with support for video calls thanks to built-in web cam

Why we like N810 so much here at Navigadget is of course because of the built-in GPS which can transform itself into a fully featured GPS navigation system. In addition N810 includes an integrated media player and 2 GB of internal memory, expandable to a full 10 GB of memory with the addition of an optional microSD memory card.

When not in range of a WiMAX network, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition can also access the Internet over Wi-Fi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology.

N810 should be available for U.S. customers where WiMAX connectivity is available as early as this summer and will cost $450.

nokia 500 review

nokia-500-review.jpg
The Nokia 500 GPS navigation system we mentioned before is already on the market in Europe and today we have review of this gadget for you from yournav.

One of the nice things about Nokia 500 is the sound quality:

…when playing MP3 files, the sound quality of this navigation unit is far above average. We’re also very pleased with the quality of the sound when the built-in FM transmitter is used to play the music or navigational instructions through the car stereo. The software allows the storage of up to five fixed frequencies for the use of the FM transmitter. This prevents constantly having to look for, and tuning to, available frequencies.

Also the hands free bluetooth function which is sometimes sketchy with other brands works without a glitch with the Nokia brand.

Overall Nokia 500 got a really good review:

In general we’re very happy about the way the most important features for this unit have been implemented. The sound quality is excellent, RDS/TMC traffic info performs as expected, hands free phoning works without a glitch and –last but certainly not least- navigating with this unit is really a piece of cake. The GPS fix is stable and very prompt.

Nokia 6650 is the new addition T-Mobile’s Nokia lineup. The main features of 6650 is its built-in AGPS receiver (yay!) and multimedia player (who cares..). The phone was unveiled at CeBIT in Germany earlier this week and is said to be available exclusively for T-Mobile international customers.

No word on what kind of software T-Mobile will make available to utilize the GPS function but we know about other features such as the 2MP camera with flash, microSD card slot, FM radio. Nokia 6650 has a 2.2″ TFT QVGA screen and supports HSPDA networks.

It will initially be available in Germany this summer.

nokia E71

nokia-e71.jpgApparently this is the leaked image of the new Nokia E71 which made an appearance at a Nokia event in Sydney recently. This device is very well equipped with WiFi, HSDPA (3.6MBps), and a 3.2MP camera, and of course the embedded GPS - seems like Nokia is determined to put a GPS receiver in each one of their devices.

It will have a QWERTY keyboard (in case you could’t tell from the picture), offer bluetooth connectivity, and have a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

More than likely Nokia E71 will use Nokia Maps 2.0 as well and if you pay your fees you can also get turn-by-turn directions, download city guides with millions of points of interest.

We’ll be sure to follow up on this once there’s an official release from Nokia… read »

another Nokia 6210 review

Published on February 18th, 2008 in gps navigation, nokia, reviews

Just a couple of days ago we talked about a Nokia 6210 Navigator review. Today we have another short review about this new Nokia phone with an internal compass.

First off is the fact that Nokia 6210 Navigator comes with Nokia Maps 2.0 and all the subscription services that would normally cost 69 € per year.

And then there is the famous compass:

The groundbreaking technology that is integreated is a full magnetic compass that even auto corrects for you location on the planet where magnetic swignals vary. You simply do a few figure eights with the device to calibrate the compass. Then when you are in pedestrian mode, which I am in on every business and personal trip, the compass works with the integrated accelerometer to have the maps orient to your true heading so you should never get lost coming out of the metro again!

There’s also this video:

The review is quite positive for Nokia 6210 - they like the breadcrumb feature too which leaves little red dots on your path so you can trace back to your hotel or car.

The sad part is we do not know when 6210 will come to U.S.

nokia 6210 navigator review

Published on February 15th, 2008 in gps navigation, nokia, phones, reviews

nokia-6220-review.jpg
Nokia 6210 Navigator got a short review from CNet yesterday which also mentions the new Nokia Maps 2.0 service. 6210 Navigator is the new release from Nokia that is designed for pedestrian navigation. With the help of a digital compass (embedded accelerometer) it points in the direction you’re headed and shows the map in correction orientation.

This staff writer doesn’t mind sharing useless information such as how she has lived in New York (Manhattan to be exact) while browsing in Barcelona and can’t even get the model number right (it is 6210, not 6120). So I wouldn’t say it is the most trustworthy review. But if you are looking forward to spending some cash on this phone it is still worth a look at:

The 6210! Navigator uses GPS and assisted GPS tracking to pinpoint the location of the phone. We were navigating through El Born in Barcelona to the Picasso Museum. The accuracy of the navigation was very impressive, especially as we walked through narrow streets among tall buildings.

But it’s not just the navigation that makes Maps 2.0 and the 6210! Navigator a perfect device for travelers, it also comes with lots of useful information. On each city map, Nokia has indicated points of interest, such as tourist sites and restaurants. You can click on the mapped icons to set your destination or get more information, such as a phone number or address.

Oh another mistake by the writer:

That said, Nokia is trying to make it a compelling sell. For example, the company is offering the navigation service on the 6220 for free.

No, it is free on this one; the 6210 Navigator, you have to pay for navigation on the 6220.

Nokia N78

Published on February 13th, 2008 in gps navigation, nokia, phones

nokia-n78.jpg
Nokia N78 is another multimedia computer phone unveiled at MWC 2008 in Barcelona.

The Nokia N78 offers various features, including integrated A-GPS, WLAN and high-speed HSPDA 3G connectivity, a 3.2MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and support for microSD up to 8 GB. As with most other Nokia A-GPS phones (except 6210 Navigator) you’ll have access to free maps from Nokia but for turn-by-turn directions and voice guidance you’ll have to spend more money.

Other features of the N78 include geotagging of photos and an integrated FM transmitter that allows music to be played on any FM radio, in a car or at home.

Nokia N78 will hit the market in Europe first in the second quarter of this year and will cost around 350€.

Nokia Maps 2.0

Published on February 12th, 2008 in gps navigation, nokia, phones, software

nokia-maps-2.jpgNokia - in addition to all the A-GPS capable phones - also introduced Nokia Maps 2.0 which is currently in beta. What this brings is a feature called “walk” which can help you find your way when you are on foot.

Currently the beta offers satellite maps of 200 cities worldwide which are downloaded over the air and saved locally. Also 3D capabilities have improved.

“Walk” is included in the navigation license for car navigation but can also be purchased separately. If you have already purchased car navigation with older Maps version, you will now get “Walk” free of charge.

It should work well with the new Nokia 6210 Navigator which has an internal accelerometer to keep the orientation of the map correct depending on the direction you’re facing.

Make sure you read the comments before you try installing this.
