Nokia Ovi Maps navigation now free; better than Google’s

Nokia just announced that they’re making their famous Ovi Maps and its door-to-door GPS navigation software completely free. It will come pre-installed on compatible Nokia phones with the local maps; depending on you live. Of course you’ll be able to download maps of new places if you need to.

Why is it better than Google Maps Navigation? First, because it is available all around the world, where as Google’s navigation solution is currently only in the U.S. Second, the maps will come installed on the phone with no need for data connection. Google needs data connection to get you maps, points of interests, etc.

As you may already Nokia owns one of the biggest digital map maker, Navteq; and with this ‘completely free’ they plan on making their higher end handsets more attractive to those who maybe on the market for a standalone GPS navigation system.

Starting in March of this year all Nokia smartphones will come with embedded GPS, Nokia Ovi Maps with maps of the country where you bough it, and of course free GPS navigation to go with it.

Here are the compatible Nokia devices today: Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5230, and Nokia X6. (N900 will join this list at some point, we just don’t know when yet)

Nokia Ovi Maps GPS racing

Nokia has a new game out which you can play on a Nokia phone (obviously) with Ovi maps. You may immediately get the idea that you actually have to drive with your phone in your hand while driving but thankfully that’s not how it works. The GPS in your phone figures out where you live and makes a course for you in your neighborhood. Pretty neat, since you are already familiar with the roads around you. Or if you choose you can pick a famous location around the world to race at. Such as Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

It is not out yet but coming soon to the Ovi Store. How much will it cost you think?

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition for the U.S.

nokia-5800-navigationNokia 5800 Navigation Edition we mentioned back in August was just announced for the U.S.

This is an upgrade from the basic Nokia 5800 package. It includes device lifetime voice-guided navigation for North America and a car kit (CR-103). It comes preloaded with Ovi Maps for mobile that offers turn by turn directions for both cars and pedestrians.

When in your vehicle the 5800 acts as a full-fledged GPS navigation system and when you’re on foot it can take you up one way streets, through parks, and other shortcuts.

You don’t need a data connection – which is the good part. Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition comes with maps for the entire U.S. and Canada.

Some other features of the Nokia 5800 include stereo speakers and surround sound, 35 hours of playback time, HSDPA support, 3.2MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens, and memory expandable up to 16GB.

It will cost you $300. No contracts necessary. Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition for U.S.

Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition

nokia-2710-Navigation-edition
Nokia just unveiled Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition – their cheapest phone with GPS navigation. Of course it is pre-loaded with Nokia Maps which is the GPS navigation software from the company that lets you get turn-by-turn driving directions with voice guidance included. Not only that but the hardware even supports an integrated digital compass.

Another neat feature is that the maps are locally stored on the Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition. Nokia is smart – because the markets they’re targeting with this low end phone may not always have data coverage – and even if they do the customers may not be able to afford it.

Wait until the second quarter of 2010 for Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition and then you can spend about EUR 110 on it.

RoadPilot Mobile

You must’ve heard of RoadPilot before. No? Well, they’re big in Europe. They do speed camera detectors – more like a GPS radar. They just announced their mobile version which currently works on Nokia’s only. However support for Samsung, Blackberry, and Sony Ericsson is on the way.

Being “mobile” the new RoadPilot Mobile has features such as the real-time alert that enables drivers to notify other members of the RoadPilot user community about new speed cameras, or a police cars on the hideout.

Navteq to crowd source traffic data from Nokia phones

One of the biggest digital map makers, Navteq, is going to be using data from Nokia to enhance its traffic reports.

Nokia, which purchase Navteq last July gathers data anonymously from millions of Nokia phones to enhance its map and traffic data.

The data will expand Navteq’s real-time traffic service to include secondary roads in addition to the primary roads it covers now. It will also improve arrival times and route planning on navigation devices using Navteq maps.

TeleAtlas, Navteq’s main map competitor already does something very similar by collecting data from TomTom GPS devices.

In addition Google just started with the crowdsourcing of traffic data, now providing traffic information on side streets as well as freeways…

Well, Nokia decided to load this device Maemo 5 OS which is completely Linux based – which means a lot for all the true geeks out there. It also promises a very decent web browsing experience with Mozilla technology and full Adobe Flash 9.4 support. Speaking of internets, we have to mention how connected Nokia N900 is. It does fast internet connectivity with 10/2 HSPA and WLAN – currently supporting 900/1700/2100 MHz. Of course there’s bluetooth too.

How much will the Nokia N900 will cost you? When it comes out in October in selected markets it will go for about 500 Euros.

In the US this would be just over $700. Oh and the 1700Mhz means you can get this on T-Mobile. Nice.

nokia-booklet-3G

Nokia Booklet 3G is the first laptop from the company. That’s pretty big news. It runs Windows Vista, has 3G connectivity, WiFi, and of course A-GPS. The screen measures 10.1″ but you’ve got an HDMI interface. The battery supposedly can last 12 hours, and you also have bluetooth. Syncs seamlessly with your Nokia phones and comes in various colors.

The design is also pretty impressive. You’ve got an ultra thin device with durable aluminum metal work and a high gloss finish (Finnish?).

It has an Intel Atom processor, weighs 1.25 kilograms, and is slightly more than two centimeters thin. Don’t forget the front facing camera and the SD card reader.
