Magellan iPhone case includes battery and its own GPS receiver
Jun 30, 2010 gps navigation, gps software, iphone, magellan

Yep, you heard it right. This 200 dollar case from Magellan includes battery and its own GPS receiver for your iPhone. This must be the first of its kind. This iPhone is not only high tech but also very rugged and may give you a false sense of confidence that you can do anything just because you won’t scratch your fancy glass screen. Not to mention it is also IPX7 waterproof – meaning it can be immersed in 3 feet of water up to 30 minutes.
Called ToughCase, Magellan made sure the device worked with both iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch and you had access to all the functions of the device. As far as hardware specs Toughcase comes with a whopping 1840mAh battery which should double your phone’s life, and a SiRF Star III GPS receiver. Also the added GPS functionality should work with any GPS navigation app you wish; it doesn’t have to be Magellan’s own GPS navigation app.
You can pick up Magellan’s ToughCase from their site or Apple Store. You don’t think you need a rugged case? Then maybe you’ll like their iPhone car kit we reviewed not too long ago.

new GPS navigation systems from NAVIGON
Jun 29, 2010 gps navigation, navigon

NAVIGON – at least in Spain – has put six new GPS navigators on the market, almost a complete overhaul of the range of the manufacturer.
Like other brands are already doing, new series 40 and 70 of Navigon adopt new names easier to remember and away from meaningless numbers and letters. So now the new Navigon GPS they are covered in three segments: Easy, Plus and Premium, to which they add two digits to give you an idea on the size of your screen.
Needless to say, the new Navigons with these easier names still focus on focus on providing navigation from one point to another in the simplest way. Navigon is also trying to do the same thing on smart phones with their MobileNavigator.
The GPS 40 series have a 4.3 inch screen, slightly larger than the more advanced phones. Its main features include text to speech, One Click menu with direct access to three points of interest you’ve marked as favorites, lane assistance, and reality view at big junctions.

Droid X means no more stand alone GPS navigation system
Jun 25, 2010 android, copilot, google, gps navigation, gps phones, gps software

The Droid X we talked about last week has since been officially announced by Motorola and Verizon. Here is what we think: If Droid X won’t replace the stand alone GPS navigation system in your vehicle then we don’t know what will. Motorola must know this too so they even announced a car mount for the Droid X right away.
With the Android OS you get Google Maps Navigation for free; or if you choose you can pay for onboard maps such as the one from CoPilot. Either way any GPS navigation software with 3D graphics should work just fine on the Droid X thanks to its 1Ghz processor. To make things even better the mount automatically triggers a dashboard app that gives you quick access to your music, internet radio, and of course GPS navigation app. It can connect to your car aux via the 3.5mm cable and keep your phone charged.
Droid X has a 4.3″ touch screen display with 854×480 resolution, a camera with dual LED flash, auto focus that can capture 8MP photos and 720p videos. It has a 1540mAh battery, 8GB on board memory, and needless to say: aGPS, stand alone GPS, and electronic compass. It runs on Android 2.1 right now but will be upgraded to Android 2.2 to support flash format as well.

GPS X-Guider Back Tracker
Jun 24, 2010 gps backtracker, gps navigation, gps tracking, sports gps

There’s a new GPS back tracker out there called GPS X-Guider Back Tracker. We’ve seen some back trackers here on Navigadget before but this one seems to be combining a lot of their features into one.
Like we just said GPS X-Guider is not just for finding where you parked your car at a giant American mall. With the included PC software it actually lets you plan your trip online and upload to your device to guide you during your hike. That’s our favorite feature but you can use for it’s most basic function: Pointing you to a place you’ve marked. During which it’ll show you the direction you need to head, distance to destination and your current speed.
GPS X-Guider Back Tracker even lets you record your trips; much like a GPS data logger. Once you’re back from your trip; hiking, cycling, fishing, or whatever it may be; you can upload your trip to your PC and view it on Google Maps.
There’s more though – it can be used as a compass, speedometer, reliable satellite clock, or a workout partner to calculate avg speed, distance, and calories burned. GPS X-Guider Back Tracker goes for $109 – not bad for a little gadget that could save your life.

Don’t forget our latest giveaway of the i-gotU GPS Travel Logger. It ends in three days so you still have time to go here and leave a comment for a chance to win. That’s all you have to do.
This is a very easy to use GPS data logger – mostly designed to carry with you while you’re away and snapping photos left and right. You carry this with you and hit the button as you take pictures. Once you’re back on your computer the software takes care of figuring out which photo goes with which location. Pretty nice.
