golf app on iPad by Terra Imaging

If you were waiting to see if they would make an iPad app for golfing you’re in luck. You may see the new 3D Golf Course Navigation System in a golf cart at your favorite golf course soon. Developers say the beautiful screen and the compact size make the new iPad perfect for golf carts (we agree!)

What’s interesting is that they decided to add an external Leica GPS antenna to the iPad even though iPad itself carries an A-GPS receiver. This could be for several reasons though. First, Terra Imaging probably plan on using their 3D golf course mapping software on iPad with WiFi only (which we know won’t have GPS), second they’re partners with Leica and just need a reason to use their hardware, and third maybe they actually just need a more powerful GPS receiver.

I assume these are being marketed to golf courses for golf cart fleets?? It seems like this would be quite a bit more expensive than traditional GPS systems that are built into golf carts. Golfers will love them I’m sure… although not enough to take their personal iPad out for a round of golf!

This seems a brilliant idea for an app, but I can’t help but think it would be a bit impractical to take an iPad to a golf course!

How impractical is a 1.5 lb tool? Do either of you own an iPad? Let’s say that the golfer in question owned an ipad. then for $2.99 could get a GPS enhanced 3D model of the course he was playing on. You don’t think that would fly of the virtual shelves? I know that if we offered that at my course and had a “Pro” come in to show them how to use it, everyone of the members would drop $499 to get one just for their cart.

i dnt think people get the idea that their not tryin to sell ipads to golf courses, its an app aimed at people who own one, and indstead of forkin out 200 pound for a golf gps they get it for less than a tenner, not gonna fly off the shelves mate, n ye, if sumone sed to me heres a golf gps for 200 pound or heres an ipad for 500 with a gps inbuilt i no wat id prefer to buy, idiot

Either way it will fly off the shelves at most pro shops. The 3D of the Torrey Pines course is very impressive.
