MiBuddy to run on Android
Oct 31, 2009 android, google, gps navigation

MiTAC Inc is planning for a new lineup of device called MiBuddy. The rumor is that these devices will come with Google’s Android OS as soon as 2010. What’s even better is that these GPS navigation systems will be very capable and carry the necessary components for WiFi, Bluetooth, and even WiMax – since Android makes it so easy for manufacturers to utilize those features.
We have no image of MiBuddy available at this time but it sounds like it will carry a 4.7″ touchscreen with the addition of a slide out keyboard, and a windshield mount for in vehicle use of course.
Even though there won’t be cellular network modules in MiBuddy it sounds like the device can be used for VoIP with its WiFi and WiMax connectivity. No details about pricing just yet…

PhotoTrackr Mini DPL900
Oct 31, 2009 gisteq, gps navigation, gps tracking, phototrackr

If you’re into goetagging you’ll remember that more than a year ago we mentioned Gisteq’s PhotoTrackr. Just last week they announced a new version of the device called PhotoTrackr Mini DPL900.
The new one is smaller, cheaper, and more compatible. It doesn’t really “hook up” to your camera – you just sync the clock on your camera and then take the PhotoTrackr with you. PhotoTrackr Mini DPL900 can last up to 17 hours in continuous mode and it can track 65 satellites at once. The GPS chipset is from Skytraq which can provide tracking with signals as weak as -160dBm.
It can store up to 250000 records in its tiny 2MB storage space and the software that comes with it works with PCs and Macs.
It costs $69 and will start shipping in November.

Thanko GPS watch
Oct 30, 2009 google, gps navigation, gps tracking, gps watch

Thanko of Japan is getting to release a new GPS watch that actually looks like an ordinary wristwatch. If it wasn’t for the battery, satellite, and way point icons and LEDs on its face you wouldn’t be able to tell this little thing was tracking your location. The name of this GPS watch is unfortunately GPSTRVBK which means nothing in any known language on earth.
Once you wear this watch, or convince somebody to wear it, you can transfer the GPS track logs to a PC and lay them over Google Maps. It sells for 17800 Yen (~ $200) in Japan, and apparently it is coming to geekstuff4u.com very soon…

google maps marker homicide
Oct 30, 2009 google, gps navigation

Not much to say here. It is just a shirt design from bustedtees with the world famous Google Maps marker causing the death of an innocent pedestrian. We’re sure you’ll look better in it than that dude modeling it.
Would you wear this or the one Google Maps engineer is wearing in the videos here that says “I’m here”? via

This funny helmet you’re looking at is the “user interface” of a GPS navigation system that directs the lucky wearer by pulling their ear in the direction they need to head. Possible uses may include aiding the hearing and visual impaired with getting from point A to point B. Or it is just the Japanese being themselves again…

google navigation
Oct 29, 2009 android, google, gps navigation, gps phones, gps software, iphone

Google – the supreme being of the internets – just announced their new GPS navigation application which will cost nothing. It will come standard on the Android 2.0 OS. And soon it will probably be offered on Blackberry, WinMo, and one day even the iPhone.
Before we go into the details of Google’s new turn-by-turn GPS navigation application – we would like to ask you? What do you think this will do to standalone GPS makers? Or more importantly what will all these iPhone GPS apps will do once it hits the iPhone? Do you think the stock prices changes of TomTom and Garmin were because of Google’s announcement?
Anyways – officially called Google Maps Navigation – the new application is an internet connected GPS navigation system with voice guidance. It will be part of Google Maps Mobile and will is already available on phone with Android 2.0.
Some features include ability to search by business name, search by voice, traffic view, search along your route, satellite view, street view, and finally a car dock mode for devices which support it.
A question that comes to mind is how will will caching of maps along your route will work – so you don’t have to rely on a 3G network. Can you get directions from LA to NY and have all the maps downloaded before you leave the Pacific?
On a separate note I would personally like to thank Google for not using Starbucks as an example destination. Instead they used In-N-Out :)

number of GPS chips will skyrocket
Oct 28, 2009 gps navigation, misc news

According to a study done by In-Stat the number of GPS chipsets will increase mostly due to their integration into mobile devices, sat navs, cellular phones, netbooks, and a variety of other portable devices. Categories with most expansion is expected are ultra mobile devices (UMDs), handheld games, portable media players, and even digital cameras.
GPS chipset shipments are expected to grow from 110 million in 2006, to 725 million in 2011. GPS chipset revenues are expected to grow from $520 million in 2006, to more than $1.3 billion in 2011, with the extremely high volumes offsetting the very rapid chipset price erosion.
Currently Qualcomm is quite big with cell phones with integrated GPS solution, while SiRF is the leader when it comes to standalone GPS navigation systems…
