garmin nuvi clocked over 500mph
Aug 22, 2009 garmin, gps navigation
Check out this video of some guys taking their Garmin Nuvi 265WT with them on a Cessna 750 plane. Mounted on one of the passenger windows, the nuvi was able to keep its satellite lock and report accurate speed. However it messed up with the altitude just a bit – several thousand feet that is.
It is kind of fun to see the maps move so fast – and see exactly which roads you’re flying over.
Garmin Nuvi 265WT goes for about $200 on Amazon.

Basically, My Nokia N82 can track 900+ kmph accurately even with the altitude. No need to keep on the window. I sit on the window seat. once the gps is locked i keep phone in my pocket. it never looses the signal.

I don’t see the big deal here. Even igo2006 could do this years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0yeCFTAjiU

@ Sany –> Your Nokia is not going to be anymore accurate than the Garmin, regarding altitude. Even supposing the N82 had a barometric altimeter, that wouldn’t help unless you were sitting on the wing!
While GPS has an easy time tracking movement on the X and Y planes (har har), the Z plane is much harder. While GPS satellites are spread out both north, south, east, and west of you, they are above but NOT below you. This is why a standalone GPS antenna can only give a rough estimate of elevation and not the accurate measurement of an altimeter measuring pressure it’s atmosphere.
Also, while a GPS can maintain satellite acquisition in your pocket, that will seriously harm accuracy. Depending on your needs, a 100 foot discrepancy could be a serious problem.

I agree with j. I’ve been using a Garmin Etrx Vista on commercial airliners for years. Speeds close to 600 mph are common. And, yes, it is nice to see what towns, highways, and rivers you are flying over. Also you get a more accurate arrival time than they give you from the cockpit.
