TomTom for iPhone + car kit
Aug 4, 2009 gps navigation

Interwebs on the other side of Atlantic are talking about TomTom’s iPhone GPS navigation app and the kit that you should get (but optional) with it. It looks like an online seller is already offering both the app and the car kit (not yet in stock) for a total of £113.85 which equals to about $193.
So – what do you think about this price? We want to know. No monthly fees. Just about $200 which will get you a car charger, ability to stream music to your car stereo, etc.. in addition to the GPS navigation system.
By the way we have some more details on this car kit:
- 1. ‘EasyPort’ mount – same one from TomTom ONE and XL
- 2. Speaker for the voice directions and the hand-free calls + external GPS receiver
- 3. Volume control
- 4. Microphone for hand-free calls
- 5. USB connector
- 6. audio jack to use your car’s audio
Oh, and it will work on iPod Touch we hear.

I’m betting that price is a guess and that the company is hoping to make a few bucks by netting some enthusiastic pre-orders. Not saying they are trying to rip anyone off, just saying that they have to put SOME price on there, and that they are hoping to be at least close or slightly high rather than slightly low (and take a loss; let’s face it, what business wants that?). My own SWAG would be around $150. It puts it above the bottom-of-the-barrel GPS’s, but then that could be understood since you are (in theory) getting so much more because of what the iPhone offers for connectivity and whatnot.
But honestly, if it actually WAS $200, I think it would still be worth it as long as the features (contact search, multipoint routing) were there to justify it. When you think about it, just getting a current-generation standalone GPS that is bluetooth and wireless data-enabled is going to cost you a minimum of $350 or $400, at least from Garmin and TomTom and the other high-quality GPS manufacturers. As long as they don’t skimp on features, I’d say $200 is fair.

[...] The car kit itself seems very cool and I hope to get the chance to try one. The car kit includes the new TomTom mount, which I really like. It also incorporates a speaker and a microphone as well as an external GPS antenna which means that you don’t have to buy the very latest iPhone with GPS and Compass (although that would be my pick right now) if you already have an iPhone or iPod Touch. The car kit also charges the iPhone when it is in the cradle. [...]

I have a feeling no1 is going to buy this and if some do they are getting ripped off the software just came out and is $99.99 and then add in the price of the kit $150-$200. So that puts the whole package in the range of $249-$299…just go out and buy a standalone GPS unit…or better wait for someone to release something cheaper…I think TomTom blew this one!

Donald – the price of the kit includes the software. It’ll be between 150-200 for all of it.

Does anyone know when Singapore and Malaysia maps be available on the iPhone? Also I assume the Tom Tom software runs without an Internet connection or wireless access?
Cheers.
