TomTom for iPhone details

If you’ve been following the news for iPhone GPS Apps then you already know about TomTom iPhone GPS navigation app. It was announced when iPhone 3GS was announced but since then we haven’t heard anything new about TomTom’s plans.

People at Macworld had a chance to interview VP of Marketing Development for TomTom and cleared out some questions we had about TomTom’s iPhone GPS navigation solution.

What’s unique about TomTom is that their iPhone GPS navigation solution is two parts. The actual iPhone app and the car kit. You should note that the car kit part is completely optional and you can get directions and everything without it. However the car kit really enhances your navigation experiences and turn your iPhone into a true standalone GPS navigation system.

As we mentioned when it first came out the car kit will include its own GPS receiver for better reception. That’s one. Plus it will have its own speakers so you don’t have to rely on wimpy iPhone speakers. That’s two. It’ll charge your iPhone and it will also mount it on your windshield. That’s three and four. Oh and a couple more things: You can use the available audio out to listen to your music and directions from your car stereo (your car has aux-in right?) and the microphone to use it as a handsfree kit. That’s a lot of little helpful things packed into one car kit!

Another nice feature is that your iPhone’s contact list will be available from the TomTom app interface so you’ll be able to navigate to that person’s address quickly without having to copy paste the address details.

However still no news on when or for how much… Any guesses?… via

I hate my TomTom GO 730. So many bugs and issues I have with it. I should have got what I really wanted.

That being said, I really hope this setup works for iPhone users who want it.

As far as price? I think its going to be different prices. The cheaper will have less POIs, will not read street names and no traffic. And the top price will give you everything. Now I’m sure, like all of other Tom Tom’s services, you will have to pay for the cheep gas finder app and traffic. Tom Tom would be dumb to undercut their own device.

I hope the maps will be local on the iPhone and not OTA (over the air). That would suck sense the iPhone still has choppy service.

I’m guessing 99$ for the SW, and 159-179$ special pricing for the kit with HW, going up to 199$ soon.

If the cradle does not have dock connector pass through then it is a no go for me. Aux in is so 2007 and good setups now have dock connector interface (or aftermarket dock connector such as USA Spec or DICE). I already have dock interface to car with charging and Proclip iPhone mount so I will probably not get dock but added GPS would entice me if it had dock passthrough. Seriously considering Sygic Mobile Maps from iTunes store. 1. It should be real competitor to TomTom with an update and 2. It is available now!

I’m guessing it will be in line with a new TomTom ONE, which is around £130 in the UK. However I’d only be prepared to buy one if it costs less than £99.

Sorry for the UK prices :)
