eTrex Legend H
Jan 16, 2009 garmin, gps navigation
Also just announced by Garmin was the eTrex Legend H – another low-cost ($150) handheld GPS receiver plus navigator.
eTrex Legend H also has a high sensitivity receiver (which you can see near the top of the unit – white square box) that can get satellite fix under dense tree canopy or deep canyons.
There are no fancy features in eTrex Legend H but you’ve still got the USB interface for uploading Topo maps.
eTrex Legend H has a 2.4″ grayscale screen – just like the eTrex Vista H – which can be used to view basemap of North and South America, containing major lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads and coastlines.

Now, will the eTrex Legend H and the eTrex Vista H fix the display-breaking and joystick-breaking problems that the eTrex Legend and eTrex Vista have???

Just bought one of these after going through two eTrex Legends. When they say this thing is high-sensitivity, they’re not kidding – it holds satellite signals through heavy forest cover and even through the roof of my house. The software has been completely rewritten and I suspect that most of the electronics have been switched as well. The unit draws much faster and displays fine detail on topo maps at a much higher scale. The only caveat is: treat this thing gently: the screen is delicate and the joystick can’t handle much rough treatment. You’re probably better off hooking it onto the outside of your pack than letting it rattle around in a pocket. Well done Garmin.
