Palm Pre GPS navigation

Palm just recently released some more information about their new touchscreen Palm Pre which they unveiled a few days ago at CES 2009. As we expected GPS navigation will not be free on Palm Pre. This is from their press release:

GPS requires data services at additional cost. Coverage not available in all areas at all times.

However we do know the navigation software will be “Sprint Navigation” which actually powered by TeleNav. Sprint Navigation charges $2.99 per day, or $9.99 per month.

It’s sad to hear that there will be an additional charge for GPS service on the Palm Pre. After you add up the Voice Services, Data Services, Text Messaging Services, and GPS Services, the monthly fee for using this phone is going to be out of reach for many consumers.

Hopefully Sprint will realize this and create a all-in-one package (similar to AT&T’s package with the release of the original iPhone). Otherwise, Sprint will just be hurting Palm. Other mobile networks: take note.

I agree with Travis. This takes my Pre enthusiasm down a notch. Guess i could always connect it with my bluetooth GPS thing and run TomTom on the Pre like I do on my treo 700P. But that takes up 1gbyte of the Pre’s 8.

I checked out the family plans on Sprint today and they do indeed offer several different packages with GPS navigation included. The ‘Everything Data Family Plan’ for example lists: “Unlimited data: Web surfing, email, BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS), GPS Navigation, Music Premier, TV Premier, NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile”.

i have the everything data family plan and they still wanna charge me $9.99 a month for gps. it says gps nav included but is it free. its capable of gps cuz i have used it but got charged $2.99 for 24hr use. i dont know. false advertising if u ask me.

Sprint everything plans include texting, data, and gps. They start off at 69.99 with 450 min, so its at worst comprable to the ipod plan, but better if you ask me because it includes unlimited texting, which would be another 19.99 on AT&T or Verizon. All of their smartphones need this plan anyway, because what good is one without data access? Ive had their basic everything plan for a while now and have had no extra charges for texting or gps on my HTC Touch. They are basically saying that the Pre will need to be on an everything plan, not that there will be seperate charges for unlimited data, text, and gps.

I wonder if I’ll be able to use the TomTom GPS software and Holux bluetooth receiver that I use on my Treo 650, on a Pre?

You won’t be able to use TomTom software from your Treo with the Pre. The Treos, Centro, and other Palm products run PalmOS. The Pre runs the new webOS.

Although webOS is cool, it is not compatible with the existing Palm OS. You would either have to buy a new version of the TomTom software or else buy a Palm OS emulator (if they ever make such a thing).
