unlock GPS on Verizon’s Blackberry Pearl and Curve
Dec 5, 2008 gps navigation, phones
There’s been reports that the latest firmware release 4.5.0.97 for Blackberry Pearl and Blackberry Curve is unlocking the GPS feature on these devices for free use. If you’re not aware Verizon likes to charge $10/month to let you use the GPS and get turn-by-turn directions.
People are curious whether this was intentional on Verizon’s part or just a big mistake.
It only appears to work on OS 4.5 as BlackBerry Maps for OS 4.3 did not have the option to select the Internal GPS. We couldn’t get Google Maps to work, either – it still used the crude cell phone triangulation method to pinpoint our location.

It seems they only semi-uncrippled the GPS. The internal GPS (aGPS) only works with BB Maps and no other app (other then of course the VZ Nav program).
