speed camera alerts for iPhone

Published on October 25th, 2008 in gps navigation

There’s a new app for the Apple iPhone called Cams Ahoy!. It utilizes the GPS capability of iPhone and can provide alerts when a photo enforcement device such as speed cameras or red lights cameras are approaching.

There isn’t much of a centralized database for these kinds of cameras in the U.S. but Europe is swarmed with speed cameras and thus there are many databases documenting where they are down to the centimeter. Cams Ahoy comes pre-programmed with over 22,000 camera locations licensed from www.SCDB.info which claims to provide over 99% coverage in 34 countries.

Only for iPhone 3G… (thanks Peter)

  2. They believed all the hype that they would become rich over speed cameras. I have conducted a centralized database with leading Forex Brokers, and the most important question you can ask them is always the same, I will explain. 34 countries are way too high.

After trying a lot of apps for the iPhone for “speed camera” detection, I never was fully satisfied until i ran into an little gem called ‘QFlits’. This app doesn’t use the GPS or anything, but simply gathers info from websites that post the current speed traps along the road. (Here in Europe a lot of radio stations broadcast this info). It’s amazingly effective how you can just check whether there are speed traps on your way to work, the moment you get in your car. Of course it doesn’t include the fixed cams, but you know where they are anyway (and i allready have 3 apps that have them too, including cams ahoy :)
