Samsung PIXON M8800

Samsung is expanding its touch screen high resolution camera phone line up with Samsung PIXON M8800. It is expected to hit the shelves in many European countries as early as this month or early November for an unknown price but you can expect to pay around 550 € for this slim ( 13.8mm to be exact) phone with a really sharp 3.2″ touch screen.
It is not just the 8MP camera that makes the Samsung PIXON M8800 really high-end. It is loaded with features. Take the integrated GPS receiver for example, or the accelerometer, or the crazy connectivity you get with Quad-band GSM, tri-band HSDPA, bluetooth, and FM radio.
There’s also a good overview of Pixon 8800:
When we first had a glimpse of the M8800 we knew it as the Bresson, a name which was wisely dropped in favour of the more relevant Pixon, it became clear the phone was not going to be a smartphone but would still feature a touchscreen and the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz operating system. You won’t get Wi-Fi inside the Pixon, but it is a 3G handset with full 7.2Mbps HSDPA support, so it should speed along quite nicely on the right network. Interestingly, the Pixon has Samsung’s SRS Virtual Surround (often found on the company’s television sets) system inside plus DivX support for watching videos and a TV-Out socket for displaying them on a larger screen.
See the videos from ad campaign here.. but here is the first one for you:

The Samsung M8800 Pixon Presented as the thinnest 8 MP camera phone ever, Samsung Pixon measures 108 x 54.6 x 13.8 millimeters, being with only 0.2 millimeters slimmer than LG KC910.The 8 Megapixel camera of Samsung Pixon features auto focus, flash, face detection, WDR, geotagging, lens cover and video recording at up to 120 frames per second, so, needless to say, it is one of the best cameras unleashed on the mobile market until now. The handset includes a 1000 mAh battery capable of lasting up to 3.6 hours in talk-time mode or up to 290 hours in stand-by.

Yes, I love this phone. I love the simplicity of the user interface.

Hi
CON: Where is the GPS on this phone??
I have this phone:
The camera is brilliant and as good as any conventional digital compact camera and in particular the day shots while the night shots are excellent and miles better than any other mobile phone. The flash is powerful and good at short distance, It is not so effective at long distance. There is a great technology or even revolutionary technology in the phone and even more in the camera that truly competes with compacts, the touch screen is top of the range with an accelerator.
The manual that comes with the phone is small and completely inadequate, one look at the index and you will wonder what the scam is. In some ways this phone is underrated, but that is much deserved, this phone deserves to be left on the shelf and forgotten. It has no manual and there in no service website or friendly sales person who can run you through the technology. If you want a phone that you can be happy with i recommend the Nokia 5800 express. The Nokia is an example of user friendliness and style this phone hasn’t got, in fact if there is something this phone hasn’t , then the nokia 5800 has got it.
I would avoid this phone except for one redeeming feature, the camera and it’s cutting edge technology. After one photograph your hooked, its addictive, its light and you could carry the whole light 122 grams on a trip or adventure in the rockies and take truly amazing photographs and videos that you can post on you tube or upload to your PC and Geo tagging photographs is possible but dependent on a good signal and you can transfer them to goggle maps. The Nokia 5800 cannot compare to this camera or cam/video.
Imagine having a proper camera and a phone with internet, satellite/navigation google maps, a cam corder and a GPS system in one stylish and slim 122 gram hand device then thats the Samsung M8800.
There is one hitch SAMSUNG has not provided a workable manual. The GPS is suspiciously impossible to find on the phone. No one will has ever left a positive comment about the GPS on this phone or how to access it. Where is the GPS. The Nokia 5800 has an easy to reference GPS function with assisted GPS. So if you have a digital camera ( as we all do ) what is the point in this phone.

I left a comment here on march 10th last. I said the GPS was impossible to find on the phone and in particular there is no mention of it in the manual.
“Yes well!” It has GPS and you can find it on Google. You can’t navigate with it and there is no navigation system available like Nokia and it is not going to give you co-ordinates so you can rule orienteering out, but if you are content with google maps then it will highlight your location on google.
Geo tagging I assume works on the same principle i.e outdoors only.
This makes it a worthy contender for the Nokia 5800 which works along the same principle, but the Nokia does have the option of proper GPS navigation.
The PC studio that comes with the Samsung is used to transfer and manage music and photographs, this works fine using the memory card. To sync the organiser to the phone however is not so easy on windows XP as the PC studio does not allow the mobile phone access due to USB error. A glitch i hope Samsung get around to fixing.
The advantage:
The Samsung 8 megapixel camera is so high tech that it is as good as many compact digi cameras, although in overall performance is not as good as a digital SLR or high end market digital cameras, but you don’t bring your bulky SLR out clubbing and dining and for convenient nightlife photography and this is where the sleek samsung pixon is invaluable.
The disadvantage
The PC studio
The batterylife although a spare battery is light and small and only 5 euro on ebay.
The manual is inadequate and doesn’t mention GPS.
Flicker requires you to sign up for $24 dollars a month to upload photos to its site, so uploading directly to flicker is a gimmick.

I am having same problem, with the phone, when I run the photo, music import or export i get “cannot create default folder” Program cannot start. This is the second time I connected my phone, and the first one was no issue, this time it is a pain, and no where on google is there an answer. Please someone assist, as my camera is useless now since its FULL. on my phone.

what i did to fix this, change ur phone settings to mass storage device instead of pc studio under settings phone pc connection

I bought this phone not only for the camera, which I love, but the GPS/ geotagging I can’t find – I am pretty cross about this. As someone mentioned the manual is rubbish – if they can’t be bothered to print an advanced one – put the more advanced stuff on the website

the gps navigation can be found in applications settings by going into menu and then settings. you will need to enable the navigation in order to use it.

8-megapixel camera is the headline feature of this phone, though, these days 8mp cameraphones are still rather exotic. The Samsung M8800 is loaded with features – a superb camera, and a superb music player. But the lack of Wi-Fi connectivity must be a probable reason for people not to choose this phone.

I have had the phone for almost a year now. At first i was impressed with it, it was quite flash, and what appeared to be a good samsung phone.
However i keep having some re appearing faults. for example the camera cover often fails to close resulting in dust collecting on the lense which is very hard to clean.
Secondly, the Battery life sucks! it gets worse as time goes on.
Thirdly, I cant even find any GPS anywhere on my phone
Forthly and the most annoying of all the LOCK BUTTON. It has been placed in the most ridiculous place, (side of the phone) which makes it easy ti catch. This has resulted in wasting call minutes by calling various people in my phone book, browsing the internet, deleting an entire phonebook and putting number on a block list….all from being placed in my handbag. This after awhile starts to wear thin, and now i feel as a life long samsung customer, i am now growing to hate the brand and will not be buying another again!!! If you want your minutes for yourself and to keep your contacts i suggest you dont purchase this phone!
I am counting down the 8 months till i can upgrade and rid myself of this awful phone!

@ david shortt
you talk too much for an idiot
the manual only says the basic use of a cellular/mobile phone. because basically it’s a phone. the camera and other features is just a bonus.
