waterproof mighty mouse: GlobalSat BR-355

GlobalSat BR-355 is a very compact, waterproof, serial mouse GPS receiver unit. The unit is available at various online retailers for about $40.

The tech specs are fairly common for this type of device. It has the SiRF Star III chipset currently loaded with firmware version 3.1.1 and WAAS support turned on by default. It is accurate within five meters. Turning the unit on from a cold start takes about forty seconds, but a hot start takes just about one second.

Set up is a breeze because the unit is ready to go right out of the box. Nothing needs to be installed on your device all you have to do is plug the unit in and it’s ready to help you find your way to that pesky wedding in Albuquerque.

The incredibly small unit is waterproof as well so don’t hesitate to use it on the boat as well as in the car. It also has slip resistant coating so it can be placed on the dashboard without fear of it falling. An LED light lets you know when it has a satellite lock and if for some reason you are having difficulty acquiring a lock the base of the unit is magnetized so it can be placed on the roof of the car to improve reception.

All in all this is a handy little device that more than makes up for its small size with big time performance.

Mouse? Serial? Does this mean it hooks into a Serial port, rather than a USB port or such? Welcome to the eighties!

The mouse part I suppose means it hooks into a serial mouse port, rather than its size. Does it have a memory? What is it meant to hook into? SOmethint other than a laptop?
