modu phone: possible GPS jacket in near future
Oct 8, 2008 gps navigation, phones

For those of you who haven’t seen the Modu cell phone yet boy are you in for a surprise. The ridiculously small Modu body is the electronic insert for a variety of jackets as well as a fully functional cellular phone.
The core phone is a quad-band GSM with one gig of internal memory and a microUSB port so the phone can be connected to your pc. Each jacket will allow the Modu to perform different functions.
The Modu base is the key component of the cell phones system and the jackets it slides into, called Modumates, offer a different functionality for each jacket purchased. For instance when the Modu base is slid into the GPS jacket it can act as a GPS device. A very cool feature of this is that it can import contact information from your address book and give you detailed directions to a friend’s house.

There are currently several Modumates offered and several have GPS capability. In addition to the previously mentioned GPS Modumate there is another that is designed to be mounted on bicycles, one that is designed to play your music, and even one that is designed for children which will only allow calls to parents or other numbers selected by the caregiver.
The Modu will ship to Europe in October and is expected to land in the US in mid 2009. Base units are tentatively priced at two-hundred Euros… via
