Sep 30, 2008 geotag, gps navigation

Geotate and DXG Technology Corp came together to create world’s first geotagging camcorder. The device is based on DXG’s DVH586 and runs Geotate’s Yuma geotagging software. The companies want to target the millions of users on Youtube who now can associate a location with their videos without any extra effort.
The special deal with Geotate is that it can geotag your files almost instantly without draining too much battery and waiting for a satellite fix. It does with by storing satellite data in its raw format and leaving the calculations to be done later on your PC…

Samsung Pixon
Sep 30, 2008 gps navigation, gps phones, samsung

Samsung today unveiled the full touch 8MP camera phone Samsung Pixon. Samsung Pixon will available in October first in France and most of European countries and Asian countries soon after. But if you want to know more about the device before it hits the shelves in your area you’re going to have to make do with their mini site thephotographicadventuresofnickturpin.
Samsung Pixon boasts a 13.8mm slim design as well as many other great features associated with its high resolution camera such as 16x digital zoom, auto-focus, fast-shutter, face detection and geo-tagging. So there’s geo-tagging but seems like an embedded GPS receiver was not listed in the specs sheet which is a little surprising.

does T-Mobile G1 really have GPS navigation?
Sep 29, 2008 android, google, gps navigation, gps phones, gps software, htc, t-mobile

Unfortunately the answer maybe no. Yes we’ve read the specs too. It says:
- GPS GPS navigation capability with built-in GPS receiver and map software
So it is capable. But will it really give you turn-by-turn directions as you travel? We already talked about bunch of GPS applications on the Android platform but none of them was a simple GPS navigation application to give you directions from A to B.
GPS navigation was not even shown on the announcement site as a feature. We’ve searched for some videos too… found none that shows a promising GPS navigation application.
Why do you think there’s no default GPS navigation application on the G1? Is it because Google Maps will load slower than the speed you’re traveling at? Or is it because it will drain your batteries quite fast for having both GPS receiver and the 3G on at the same time?
However it is not all that bleak. We did come across some developers working on this though: Take for example AndNav. It is still in development but it already looks promising.

Here is the proposed feature list for AndNav:
- Worldwide Map-Routing, based on GoogleMaps
- Always up to date!
- Routes with WayPoints(From A over B to C)
- Waypoint-order can be optimized
- No need to buy MapPacks, never!
- Voice-Directions (british, by Joy Gibara)
- Street-View and Satellite View
- 100% Free (Only your Internet fees)
- FirstAid-Help
- Traffic Overlay (No TMC needed)
- Loads hiking routes in many formats (soon)
- POI-search (Points-Of-Interest) (soon)
- Various map display types (rotating or fixed)
- Different KeyLayouts and UnitSystems (Metric or US)
See a screencast of AndNav.

Abarth is back with GPS for race tracks
Sep 26, 2008 gps navigation

60′s famous Italian sports car Abarth is back (aka Fiat 500) and seems to have some sort of branded GPS navigation system that is customized for racing tracks.
It is called Blue&Me Nav and basically it is a navigator interfaced with the car through the Blue&Me system. It comes equipped with a 2GB memory card that offers maps of Itay as well as the white and yellow pages for the whole country.
With the addition of race tracks to this GPS navigation system drivers will be able to access additional details such as the position of the car over the track and of course lap times. Drivers can also store relevant details on the card and create a personal profile to keep track of their progress. In addition the device can also collect and display information about the engine such as RPM, gear, speed and more.
For those who purchase Blue&Me Nav with the vehicle – and it is available on most Fiat cars – the car will also be equipped with a keypad placed on the ceiling lights to command the services offered on the device which also includes bluetooth to sync with your mobile phone and a USB port to connect to media players. It also does voice commands.

LG Xenon
Sep 25, 2008 apple, google, gps navigation, gps phones

Apparently this is the LG Xenon that is expected to be available in the U.S. as soon as Christmas time. We’re not sure if this image is shopped or not but the you can see that LG Xenon will be available on AT&T network.
LG Xenon has a 2.8 inch screen touch screen that slides to the side to reveal an awesome full QWERTY keyboard. Unlike Apple’s and Google’s phone this LG comes with VGA video recording option and has a 3MP digital camera.
In addition it has an accelerometer, a proximity sensor, and of course an A-GPS receiver. Just like most other network locked phones you can be sure that AT&T won’t let you turn GPS navigation feature on without you shelling out a monthly fee of about $10. But it’s good to have this option then not having it at all.
As far as connectivity LG Xenon offers quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and Dual-band UMTS/HSDPA compatibility for 3G data transfers. You’ve also got the Wi-Fi, bluetooth, and the USB 2.0 port.
You can expect the Xenon to cost a lot :)

Sep 25, 2008 garmin, gps navigation, nuvi

Amazon was nice enough to put a date on the ‘not yet released’ Garmin Nuvi 775T which we mentioned back in August. The release date is now October 1st and you can already pre-order it.
Garmin Nuvi 775T is kind of an high-end product offering maps of both North America and Europe, lane assistance to help merge before it’s too late, bluetooth for hands free calls, and live traffic information with its integrated FM traffic receiver. Speaking of which this feature costs money in U.S. but is free in most of Europe. It also has an FM transmitter which this time is illegal in some European countries – namely France, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Hungry, and Poland.
As expected nuvi 775T will cost $800.
