google maps vs your navigation system

  • updates: google maps is more up to date than the maps on your gps navigation system
  • street view: google maps has it your sat nav don’t
  • traffic info: google maps has it, most others don’t. Dash Express may actually beat Google when it comes freshness of traffic data
  • satellite view: google maps has it, your sat nav doesn’t. Unless it is Lowrance 600c, but even then…
  • terrain view: google maps has it, your navigation system don’t, but newer garmin or magellan handhelds allow you to add these with a cost
  • points of interests: we’re guessing google beats your locally kept copy of nearest McDonald’s and Chevron locations (unless you have Dash Express, then you can do a local Yahoo search which is pretty sweet)
  • transit directions: google does it
  • walking directions:google does it

What’s our point? Well… one day we’re all going to have faster than 3G connection speeds and GPS in all our gadgets and all these GPS navigation systems will become obsolete thanks to feature packed Google Maps. Seriously, how can one compete with a feature like Street View? What do you think?

The single not listet feature that Google is still missing is a turn by turn loud out component, isn’t it?
While my Navi already can tell me “turn left in 200 m” google maps cannot do so, or did I miss this feature. At least the mobile version of google maps needs this feature, and if this is integrated all tomtoms and the like will be obsolete, indeed.

your point is “one day…” who knows what’s going to be one day.
today you can’t beat dedicated GPS units. Visible not cramped screen, touch screen, good sound quality, reliable routing engine. Very important points when you need turn by turn directions.
Be online and be able to search POI,Traffic do updates and see more..sweet yes, agree, who wouldn’t. But I can easily see these features going to GPS units and be more useful rather than in phones, media players etc…

    my point:
10 years ago I though would be cool to have tv,gps,phone,mp3,dvd..in one unit.. today: who wants a $1000 unit full of compromises ?

One big advantage of dedicated GPS units is that they DON’T rely on network availability to function. When you’re lost in the middle of nowhere and you can’t get a cell signal, your Garmin is still useful. Your iPhone is not. That’s huge! And I’m not sure if reliability of cell signals is really improving in rural areas, like North Dakota, where I live.

Eventually this will happen. Eventually, your 3G GPS will be just as useful as your Garmin. Perhaps Google Maps will allow you to cache maps on the device in the event you are out of 3G range.

Once that happens, no need for Garmin or others.

If Garmin was smart, they’d beat others to the punch and provide a 3G powered GPS under $500. They would also need to do provide map updates frequently and priced VERY low.

Won’t happen since all the new Garmins are locking up and rebooting like crazy. I wonder what crappy OS is running on the devices. (Do a search for Colorado “lock” or “freeze” “stuck” or “reboot”. So sad.

I have a Nuvi 750 by the way. But I end up using my iPhone to find places, and then punch the address into the garmin. The Nuvi takes FOREVER to search. Google maps on the iphone searches the internet for the latest and up to date info.

At some point, the two need to merge. They question is, will Garmin make the jump or pretend they own the holy grail of GPS…
