Garmin today announced its first multi use GPS navigation systems. One of them is the garmin nuvi 500. This new addition to the nuvi series brings up the number of total nuvi even closer to 40 (TODO: update nuvi comparison table). Nuvi 500 is based on the 205 or 255 series and currently does not have widescreen version which would probably be named 500w if existed. Garmin says nuvi can be used while driving, cycling (bike mount anyone?), boating, or even walking.
The suggested price for nuvi 500 is conveniently marked at $500 – most the of the difference in price comes from the addition of different maps – since as far as hardware it is almost identical to nuvi 200 with a few extras such as the rugged design, waterproof toucscreen, and the button to switch between navigation modes.
Another nice feature in garmin nuvi 500 is the ability to let you import pictures from Google Maps and navigate to those locations – whether you are on foot, swimming (waterproof), cycling, or in a vehicle.
nuvi 500 is expected to hit the stores in third quarter of this year and it will come with detailed street and topo maps for the lower 48 U.S. states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
