Samsung M520
Published on February 19th, 2008 in gps navigation, phones, samsung
Samsung yesterday introduced a new slider phone called M520. M520 is GPS capable. The navigation service is offered by TeleNav and it features audio and visual turn-by-turn driving directions, and more than 10 million local listings.
Press release also talks about Microsoft’s Live Search for Sprint saying it can provide GPS-enabled directions, interactive maps which makes us wonder why anyone would pay for TeleNav’s paid service. Maybe for turn-by-turn directions?
Offered exclusively by Sprint, M520 also offers Sprint TV which has more than 50 channels of on demand video and music channels.
Additional features of the M520 by Samsung include stereo Bluetooth with audio caller ID, audio player, 1.3MP camera with 2x digital zoom and camcorder. Also it has supports microSD cards upto 4GB.
Samsung M520 is already available in stores and you can get it for only $50 with a 2-year contract. If you don’t want the 2 year slavery deal you’ll have to pay $250.

February 26th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
i think this is the best phone!!!!
February 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
You can not make mp3’s from your memory card to make your ringtone. You must download your ring tone. I suggest using a site like ventones. Wink wink hint hint…..(Click name)

I just bought the m520 today, and I love it! the sliding action is fun and the size is convenient. the power vision pack is fun, and the phone is pretty… ;)
I only wish I could change the appearance of the menus and such…I’m not into the pixely, black outlined text, etc. it seems like a theme is in order…
I can find themes for every phone on God’s green earth except for this one.
Does anyone know where I can get them?
Or where I can find the sorts of people who develop these things and ask them to make one?
thanks!

Question regarding the GPS enabled feature.
Does it work like a standalone GPS device? or do you have to “subscribe” for that feature?
I can’t understand why some companies make you subscribe for the dang GPS when there are standalone GPS devices out there that can work without subscriptions.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:25 am
You have to subscribe for GPS. GPS enabled just means if you subscribe - you can use that feature on this phone. I have the Vision Pack w/Sprint and for $25.00 it includes music, tv, gps and lots more. Hope this helps.

I don’t have the Sprint Power Vision because I don’t want to extend my contract but I want ringtones that don’t suck! Is there any way to record ringtones, get them off my computer, or somehow use the memory card to get ringtones? The ones on the phone are lame and I want new ones! Please help me!

http://screplays.org/bret/samsungm520/index.html free ring tones not stupid have to go to the phone internet to download either…the folder at the end exists on the micro sd card but it seems you can’t put a plain old mp3 file into that folder and have it work…

HI…I’m debating on purchasing this phone. I am torn between this one and the Palm Centro. Any advice from those who already have either phone?
Thanks much!

IF YOU WANT TO SET A SONG AS A RINGTONE FOR THIS PHONE YOU NEED TO CONVERT THE MP3 FILE TO A 3GP ONE. THE PHONE WILL RECOGNIZE IT AS A VIDEO. IT WILL ONLY LET YOU SET VIDEOS AS RINGTONES FOR INCOMING CALLS NO LUCK ON TXT MESSAGING RINGS YET…
April 4th, 2008 at 8:05 am
What is this mail in rebate? If I mail something in I get it for $50?
April 16th, 2008 at 9:39 am
If you go to myxertones.com, you can upload MP3s to your locker and send the part you want in the song to your phone as a ringtone.
Best of all, it’s free. I usually get a new phone (I got this one this last weekend), sign up for Power Pack, upload all the ringers/wallpapers I’ll need before the month’s out, and then cancel the Power Pack since I don’t use any web stuff other than ringtone downloading.
:)
April 24th, 2008 at 10:23 am
I love this phone however I will never use most of the features it offers since the Sprint Power Pack Plan cost $25. Overall it’s a great phone.
And to repeat what Veela said go to http://www.myxertones.com and you can get all the free ringtones you want however remember it will still cost you $0.03 every kilobyte you download so it will still cost you unless you have the service. The majority of the songs are over 100Kb. It’s well worth it since the ringtones that came with the phone are lame.
April 26th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
does the battery on this phone last a long time?
April 30th, 2008 at 2:32 am
Yes, the battery life on this phone is way better compared to the Motorola K1M I just had. That phone’s battery only lasted for half a day compared to this phone. I just fully charged it out of the box and have had 3 bars for over a day and a half. Still going on 3 bars.
May 2nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
is there a better battery you can buy cause mine dies so fast?
May 4th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
To make mp3 files into ringtones you have to convert the files int 3g2 files. You can download a free file converter by doing a simple search through Yahoo, Google, or any other search engine. It makes the mp3 file into a video ringer and then you assign the video ringer to whomever you want to. Only thing is since it’s a video ringer it will play the sound, but if you have a photo assign to the person you won’t be able to see their pic, only a black screen with their number will show while the song plays.
May 4th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Two questions for all- I haven’t been able to find any more themes for this phone yet. Have any of you?
I even checked Sprint’s page and they only have the factory one so far. Has there been any news about Sprint releasing more themes for this phone?
May 6th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
for everybody wondering how to get ringtones on the m520…
what i did was i went to ventones and created a ringtone.
i then saved it to my computer instead of sending it to my phone.
then i converted it to a video file using xilisoft video converter.
then i saved it to the microsd card.
then on the phone, you go to menu>settings>sounds>ringer type>voice calls>with or without caller id>my videos>memory card>then look for the one with the red “X” on it and then that’s your ringtone.
some of the steps i got from another comment on here but i revised it to make it easier because i couldn’t figure out why my song files were over 512 kb.
using this way is easier because when i finished making the ringtone..it was only like 100 kb instead of like 700 kb.
hope this works for everybody else like i worked for me.
May 7th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Sorry, but are there two colors available for the m520? I’ve looked at photos, and have seen m520’s that appear to have some black with the chrome, and others that appear to be just silver. I’m about to make the purchase on ebay, and would be more confident if i knew that there was only one m520….thanks in advance!!
May 17th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Where are the m520 themes??????? Need some developers on this asap.
May 25th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
What is up with the comfusing MP3 ringtones how do you download from the web AHHH this is time consuming and in my day i have no room for that i bought the phone cause of looks but now i kind of regret it :(
May 27th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
If you want ringers just go to sprintusers.com or rumkin.com and look for info on how to do it. I have several on my m520 now for free. All u basically do is convert mp3 to another format and send that 30 second clip to your phone from one of these two sites via their uploader. I actually was able to use ringers from my old Samsung A900…
June 4th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
So basically i like the phone except like everyone else i’ve been
trying to do the whole ringtone thing like Rae said i converted it
to a video file using xilisoft video converter and it was still too long
then i shortened it and now it just says “media file saving… has
failed” idk why! and its driving me crazy…
any suggestions?
June 6th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Hey A.Rey I didn’t know how to do it until today. I tried the converting mp3 file that is 30 sec to 3g2 format and it told me file saving failed. What you have to do is put a video or picture to the music. What I did is I took a mp3 file “harder, better, faster, stronger” by daft punk put it into a audio editor which was audacity since it is free. I cut it to 30 secs I wanted. Then I exported it as a mp3 file. Then I took the 30 secs file and put it in windows movie maker. Put it as the audio timeline then took a random picture and put it on the video timeline. Then I exported that as a wmv file. Then I took the wmv file and put it in quick media converter (which is a free converter) converted it to a 3g2 176×144 video. Then you put it on a micro sd card. If you didnt know how you get to the media player. You go to tools mass storage file manager memory card. Find it and move to your phone album. Then go to settings, sounds, ringer type, voice calls, my videos, then assign the file that is 30 secs long and has a picture playing with the song. If this doesnt work. Then I didn’t explain something right or you did something wrong. Woah that was long. Hope this helps. O yeah you can easily google all the programs I used and get them all for free. Open-source baby!!

How come I try 2 add new videos as ringtones, and it keeps telling me “there is no space remaining in download” Its gettin me frustrated!!!! How do I fix that??? Thanks for the help!!!
June 10th, 2008 at 5:37 am
Don’t understand what the problem is with all the ringtone and mp3 troubles ppl are talking about…within 60 minutes of purchasing the M520 I was home sending mp3 files to rumkin.com, downloading them to my phone and then assigning them as ringers….just that easy…no conversion or any other mess required. (and I’m an old fart - 57 years old) This is one easy phone to use and to ‘play’ with. I suggest a USB cable and you can then use and access the phone as a storage device just like a zip drive (haven’t figured out how to move ringtones yet via the USB) pictures and everything else are a breeze to move to and from the M520 to your PC. (using XP with drivers…my youngest daughter, with Vista, didn’t even need the drivers).
: )
June 18th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I recently got the Samsung m520 as well. I have tried numerous methods of downloading songs for ringtones… all to no avail. Whats the deal.
I keep getting the “No remaining space in download” message when I use my SD card method as described by Daniel & Angela. I have nothing on my phone, its brand new. How could there not be any room. Plus the files are tiny (50k).
Using the Rumkin method recommended by Paul it says again “Not enough memory to download” and when I choose “Make room” there is nothing for me to delete.
What gives?
June 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Ok, I just got my M520 yesterday. I have gotten as far as getting my MP3’s transfered into 3g2 files and getting them onto my phone. But when I try to “Move” them to my phone to use them as ringtones, it says “There is no memory”. It says the same thing when I try to move it to Phone Albums and when I try to “Copy” it to those places. How do I get them to be used as ringtones?
June 19th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
I figured out the solution. I finally broke down and called Sprint today, because I was so frustrated. She walked me through it and heres what we did:
1. Take out the battery for 1 minute.
2. Turn phone back on and push the Menu button
3. Go to Settings> More…(7)> Data(5)> Update Data Profile(3)
4. Let it update and then restart your phone.
5. Go to the text message and try and download the ringtone or picture. It worked beautifully for me.
All that hassle, such a simple solution. Hopefully it helps you guys too.

Question…I downloaded a ringtone from sprint. I assigned it as my normal ringtone, but when people call, the phone pops up with a voice telling me who’s calling instead of the song I downloaded. I can’t figure out how to make it work. When I pull up the ringtone, it says that the song I downloaded is assigned as the ringtone but it still doesn’t work.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:46 am
Okay, so that wasn’t a question, but can anyone help me?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:31 am
I have a problem, my music on my phone never works, some of the songs are written in slants giving me the only option to “remove” but when I try, it tells me an error has occured. My other problem is when I am taking a video, it won’t, it will just cancel it, and instead of telling me how many videos/pictures I have in the memor card, it tells me 106 Folders.
Thank you to anyone who can help me!
June 22nd, 2008 at 5:33 pm
if ur running windows xp this is the site you can download a free trial converter. it converts a good amount of mp3 audio files to video files like you are talking about. you can cut and make about a 30 sec clip and convert it to a 3gp format and it’ll come up as a blank video. its hard to explain here but im sure you’ll figure it out especially if you have the usb cable.
June 24th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
i have the exact same problem as vespertine. however, the file that i am trying to remove i didn’t put there. it randomly appeared on my phone one day. i took it to sprint and asked them how to fix the problem, they said “it’s probably just a bug” and the only thing i can do to fix it is to reset my phone.
June 24th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
any clue why the memory card says 106 folders? i figured out that if you take the memory card out and then reinsert it, it will show how many videos/pictures there are again, but after attempting to remove a file that won’t erase it reverts back to saying there are 106 folders.
June 30th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
I just bought the Samsung M250 yesterday because I wanted to do things like data transfers which my Katana LX couldn’t do. Now that I’ve gone through the trouble of creating 4 or 5 30 second ringtones and saving them on my Micro SD card, I found out I have to convert them to a 3gp format. Now I have one more question, will I need to transfer these 3gp files via micro-SD card or USB Cable? or will either one work?? The way Sprint is trying to force me to buy their ringtones is really becoming a bother.
Reply to ed: What site are you talking about? I’d like to use it. I have Switch file converter but it doesn’t have 3gp format listed as an option.
Anyone have a suggestion on a file converter I should use?
July 3rd, 2008 at 11:03 am
Corey:
Try Settings> Moreā¦(7)> Call Setup(4)> Voice Caller ID(5) and make sure it’s off. Hope that does the trick.
July 6th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Do the files need to be converted to 3gp or 3g2 format? I remember somewhere that they had to be 3g2. Just want to make sure before I start. What is the volume level achieved when converting mp3’s to a video file for use as a ringer?
July 6th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Well, for the past couple of days, I have had the Micro SD Card out. I put it back in today, so far, storing video is fine, but now ALL of my music is written in slants and my only option is to remove them, but every time I try, it tells me an error has occurred.
July 7th, 2008 at 10:12 am
what I don’t understand is how to get the songs for the for ventones. I can more tha likely get it fromt there but not to that point. Someone help please!!
July 10th, 2008 at 5:55 am
Has anyone tried storing their m520 in a case w/magnetic clasp?
Over half my calls are dropped while tring to remove the phone from the case. Calls are never dropped when not in the case. Key gard in activated and phone is set to only answer when slider is up. I just noticed that with keygard active and slider down, none of the keys will make the phone light up (as you would expect), however, if I move the closed phone near the magnet on the case, the phone lights up. This is why I believe that magnet is causing the dropped calls. Anyone else experiance this?
July 11th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
How do you access a url that has been texted to you?!?!?! I used to own a blackberry and converted to this phone and it’s not working.
ATTENTION SPRINT DEVELOPERS:
This phone has a LOT of potential to sway users from cancelling their Sprint contracts and switching to AT$T. BUT, there are MANY small problems that are driving people crazy. A firmware update soon is very necessary, especially playing mp3s as ringtones. Duh duh duh duh.
July 14th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Paul:
Thanks man… I’ve been going crazy with my calls dropping before I can get the phone to my ear. Neither I nor the Sprint store could figure out why. My case has a magnetic clasp and as an experiment I took my phone out of the case and when a call came in I moved the phone close to the magnet on the case and it dropped the call. I doubt if this can be fixed with firmware updates, but I plan on telling Sprint and Samsung about it anyway. Meanwhile I’m shopping for a new case.
July 21st, 2008 at 1:20 pm
old fart Paul,
Did you just use the data cable to download the songs onto your micro SD card? And do you have internet on your phone at all?
July 21st, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Also Paul,
does it cost you the $0.03 per kB when using rumkin.com as well? Does Sprint charge you for ANY downloading? If so that sucks because I just uploaded a song to rumkin and then downloaded it to my phone, but it was 236 kB–I hope I didn’t pay $7 for a ringtone.
And if that’s the case do they charge you for downloading from the Sprint Music Store–Charge you for the ringtone and downloading the ringtone?

Very nice site!
August 7th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
anybody know how to hard reset m520s
August 27th, 2008 at 8:14 am
OK, so this is what I’ve figured out so far. First, with this phone there seems to be only one way to use actuall MP3’s as ringtones. You have to download them, which requires the internet option on your phone to be active. Then if your smart you will also get a data plan or prepare to pay a huge fee for the ring tone.
If you can’t approach it that way, like myself the you have to convert your MP3 into a 3g2 file. There are several ways to do this, run a google search and you’ll see. Then you save your files to the SD card as a vid file and use that as a ringtone. The drawback seems to be that the new file has poor sound quality and is not very loud.
I’m going to continue to work on this and see if there’s a better way, maybe somone else will figure it out as well.
The best way is to have internet access on your phone with a data plan, then it’s cake.

Several months ago I downloaded a custom ring tone directly into my M520 without accessing the INET.. I sent the the song to this site and it called my phone and installed it. I can’t remember where I did it.. can abybody tell me what site I used?
October 8th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
I’ve been trying to set a song as a ringtone. I’ve converted it to 3gp and 3g2 and pretty much everything else I can think of. When I click “videos” to make the ringtone, it says no files can be found when the file is on the SD card. Any suggestions?
October 27th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
How do you upload your own MP3s to the phone so i could listen to them whenever? Please Help
October 29th, 2008 at 6:17 am
All I did was make my mp3 went to rumkin.com and sent it to my phone, downlioaded it and set is as ringtone and it automatically sends it to the ringers folder.
