GPS Tracking Key

We’ve been asked to review this GPS Tracking Key by LandAirSea. This device (looks similar to SkyTRX which we’ve mentioned before) works on 2 AAA batteries and thanks to the powerful magnet it can even be attached underneath a vehicle. It is also is water resistant so no need to worry rain storms and such.

No word on what kind of GPS receiver is used but it can track upto 16 satellites at once and the device is accurate down to 2 – 3 meters range. The battery life is dependent on how much driving is involved for GPS tracking key is smart enough to save battery when not in motion. When used with Lithium batteries a pair of AAA batteries should last about 2 weeks with 2 hours of driving each day.

Keep in mind that this device is not a real time tracking device but a GPS logger. Once you’re done spying on that loved one you actually have to remove the device and download the data to your computer (no Macs). GPS Tracking Key comes with the necessary software that enables you to overlay your waypoints onto Google Earth.

Also check out the long list of FAQ before you invest in it. Oh, and there’s a sample report file which seems to give you an approximate street address for each location reached which is a nice touch.

These devices are widely available from pep boys, radio shack, etc. Inside the device is μblox RCB-4H (http://www.u-blox.com/products/rcb_4h.html). These are actually programmable devices (arm processor) and Land Air Sea is using a custom software program to log the waypoints. The log files downloaded from this device are in an unreleased format, and you have to use the bundled software to convert the data to a google earth kml file. The software only runs on windows. Under linux and macintosh osx, the device is recognized as a nmea gps serial device. No software exists to download waypoints or convert them from the devices’s unique format.

Hello, I live in southern Spain and I’m thinking in purchasing one of the GPS Tracking key, will this device work where I live?

    Thanks, Larry

This thing is garbage, don’t waste your money! Rarely locks on to satellites, and, if it does, it takes forever…even on the dashboard. If there is anything other than glass between the tracking key and the sky, it will NOT lock on. Go with something else unless you drive around for at least 2 hours.

  9. GPS Tracker Says:

The Tracking Key is the best PASSIVE tracking device on the market. I know because we sell it. We have sold about 13,000 of these devices, with less than 1% failure rate.
