retro navigation system from 1981: gyrocator

Electro Gyrocator was an actual option for Honda Accord’s for an additional $2,750 back in 1981. It was somewhat of a ‘navigation system’ – if you could call it that – that tried to keep track of your location on transparencies. It did this by using a gas gyroscope which in principal is a way of dead reckoning.

It was developed and used by Honda and Alpine until location fix by GPS satellites made them obsolete… via
