GLL-1000 GPS Letter Logger
Nov 23, 2007 gps navigation, tracking

United States Postal Service commissioned CA based TrackingTheWorld to design a GPS tracking device to fit into a standard size envelope and keep a log of its location and time spent at that location.
This data can obviously used in many different way but the idea is to find ways to increase quality of service, reduce delivery times, pinpoint logistical inefficiencies, and save costs and eliminate waste.
To design a such a device is a challenging task but engineers at TrackingTheWorld came up with what you see in the picture, called GLL-1000, which seems to use u-blox GPS tracking chip, an extension slot for microSD cards, and a 1100mAh battery that can last from 20 hours to 2 weeks depending on how often you want to receive updates. You can also put GLL-1000 in tilt mode which will activate the GPS tracking device only when it moves.
The so called Letter Logger will be available for USPS use February 2008. There’s no word on whether it would be available to general public – but I don’t see why they would limit themselves to USPS only. People can get very creative with toys like this… via
