gphone demystified
Published on November 7th, 2007 in gps navigation, software
Everybody was a little disappointed yesterday when Google announced GPhone and it was not an actual phone. It turned out to be some sort of Open Handset Alliance that didn’t mean a lot to the end consumer. So we at Navigadget decided to translate their press release cartoon to something everybody could understand.
The new GPhone is going to support the following Google services/searches when it comes out in second half of 2008:
- gmail
- picasa
- weather
- google earth
- music search
- flight info
- youtube
- local search
- traffic info
- maps and directions
There you have it. And as we speculated before GPhone will have GPS so it can pinpoint your location for maps and directions and stuff.
All of this information is going to pop out of your light blue handset in 3D form.

Actually, you should say that a GPhone CAN have GPS, it depends on what the hardware developer puts in, they could opt for a Bluetooth solution or no GPS at all and disable those functions.
All the items you list are what is possible on the GPhone but do not have to be in the phone.
Plus Google seems to also allow other applications (All applications are created equal) to do even those core functions so if you like another photo viewer you can remove picassa.
