Strada CN-GP50U
Panasonic’s CN-GP50 model which we talked about here at Navigadget before got the official word from the manufacturer today. The only difference is the last letter in the model name which now changed to CN-GP50U, instead of the CN-GP50N. Possibly CN-GP50U is the model they’re introducing in the U.S. with maps from Navteq covering U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Strada CN-GP50 will be available in December for $500. You should look into CN-GP50 if the mainstream 4.3″ screen is not big enough for you since Panasonic put a huge 5″ screen on this GPS navigation system. The device also has some high end features making up for that 1/2 grand price tag; offering voice recognition to set your destination which learns your vocal characteristics for enhanced accuracy, regardless of language or dialect, an electronic compass to keep you on track while GPS signals are weak, and bluetooth phone connectivity to take calls hands free… via

I purchased both CN-GP50U and Magellan 4250 and ran them simultaneously. I returned the CN-GP50U after two days because it is not user friendly. When you type in your destination city, street, etc it scrolls your entry like a marquee which makes it very difficult to type in your destination, very frustrating. It is supposed to help you enter your destination but it is a hindrance. The fast route or short route options is buried in the backend of a 9 page setting options. Very time consuming when switching from short route or fast route. I live in Los Angeles and you have to be able to hop back and forth often to calculate your best route. It does re-calculate your routes very fast and gives very accurate routes. Another situation is that it could not find the major retailers in one of the largest shopping centers in the world here in Los Angeles even if I were only a mile away from it. It only has 1.6 mil POI in North America (US & Canada). I don’t recomment it at the price of $500. This is a first generation model GPS.

Re CN-GP50U. Also, the voice prompt could not pronouce BOULEVARD correctly, which really gets under my wife’s skin. It prounces it as BouleVERT (emphasis).
