  • Speaker/Earphone: Built-in speaker/3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Battery: 1200 mAh Lithium-lon
  • Dimensions 4.21″x3.15″x0.91″(107×80x23mm)
  • Weight 3.88oz(110g)

sells for $289 Canadian dollars which is about $271USD. You can read more about it at Mio C220s product page… and if you figure out what the ’s’ really stands for let us know.

I think the S stands for subpar. The Canadian version only has major US roadways. And to top that off, there is no apperant way to upgrade that at this time, unless you live in Europe.

Was just about to go to Staples in Vancouver and buy the Mio 220s for $249 CAD when it has been confirmed that the Canadian version has no US maps.

Thanks, I’ll give this one a pass unless someone can confirm that you can download US maps for free.

OK, I’ve found some informative posts about the Mio c220s (Canadian) version. It lacks the 1GB SD card and a DVD that comes with all the US maps and POI. It only has the “major US roadways”. (See the webpage linked to this post).

Aside from the US map issue, the poster likes his c220s and the device works well in Canada. Unfortunately, since I live in the GVA and make frequent trips to Washington State and Oregon, no detailed US map support is a no go for me.

As far as I have found out, there is no easy way to download all the US maps – and assuming you can, it will cost you an arm and a leg.

BTW, TomTom One is on sale ($100 discount) for $299 CAD by TheSource-CC (formerly RadioShack) until July 31. Check out their website.

Just got one at Staples for $119.
It comes with a disk that includes manuals and two maps, Canadian map looking fairly good at the moment and the USA map being pretty sparse unless all your destinations are on a major route.
It comes with an automotive cigarette lighter battey charger, but no USB cable to charge from your computer. Luckily, I had one lying about. To get the USA map into the GPS, I had to load it onto a SD chip (also not included) and then insert the chip into the GPS.
Having said all that, it seems to be a pretty nice device at the price.
If you are tripping around Canada or are looking for lat/long locations it’s fine.
Major downfall is the fact you can’t seem to buy additional maps for it without buying another whole GPS. There seem to be local versions of the GPS for Canada (the ’s’ version reviewed here), the USA and Italy at least.

Also got one from Staples for $119 and now the price went back up. I was impressed by its guiding me through strange streets at the night when you can’t see where you are. Also good for looking up phone#s of POIs like with a yellow page. I set other map color choises which are better than the MIO Map scene. Anyone knows how to make the animation (which may be at the driving speed) go faster?
Mounting: Need a horizontal spot on the dash close by, or it gets too far to reach, as is my case. Anyone know why the charging indicator goes on and off? I replaced the unit and the new one is the same.

Take a while to learn, the manual is 80 pages long but well written.

where did you get the us maps or at least what are they called on the net. i’m looking for them on the net but i don’t know what to look for. i read that full us maps are supposed to be 900mb to 1.3 Gb

Ive been using mine for a month and have been very happy with the little unit. I too have been looking for US map downloads as well to load via the media card slot. Hopefully MIO will have them available sometime this year.
I know that you can buy the sd card with US maps online at Mio ’s european site, but I believe it says it will only work for gps sold over there?

  11. Jerzy Says:

Do not buy it, the whole year gone and no maps or drivers are available to download, it becoming slowly obsolete

  12. DJP Says:

    Don’t buy this item!
No map updates have been released since its creation.

I’ve called the support number numerous times to hear the same thing, “There are currently no map updates, nor have we been informed of any future updates” … all in all … the rep said to me that chances are there’ll never be an update.

As mentioned previously, completely obsolete… past your 1 yr warranty, they simply don’t care about you or your concerns.

I am so frustrated with MIO…I bought the C220S and like it however as everyone else has mentioned….there is no support offered…I wonder how much of a stink we have to raise before they start caring about their customers? I can’t believe they do not offer a detailed US map or any updates at all for that matter??? What kind of GPS company are they anyways??? I just read that they bought Magellan so I hope they don’t ruin the customer service aspect of that company as well…! Does anyone know how to find updates or maps for the MIO C220S? Thanks Andy
