rumor: iPhone to get GPS in 2008

iphone-gps-033.jpg
Apparently the next generation iPhone which will probably be announced in spring 2008 at Macworld will incorporate a SiRF Star III chip or something along those lines. According to this source which doesn’t not cite any other source:

Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover.

A-GPS helps the device for a fast satellite fix by getting some help from cell phone towers. SiRF’s press release from February of this year does talk about a collaboration with NXP Semiconductors to speed the development of cost-effective location-aware 3G wireless handsets though. Something to think about… via

I have always been amazed at why cell phone companies don’t enable full bluetooth. especially if the phone must have a data plan. why not just open it up for bluetooth GPS. and sync wirelessly. these are things i would consider in this day and age as a must. with cars having bluetooth in them and GPS. it would be nice to have the phone connect wirelessly and the car could also get “updates” threw the phone. multi-millon dollar companies always leave out a feature that we would expect.
