GPS tracking for dogs (or kids)
May 22, 2007 gps navigation, tracking

What you see up here is the handheld receiver portion of a GPS tracking system for dogs. Called RoamEO, the device lets you setup a virtual fence for your dog. Even though it is a GPS tracking system RoamEO doesn’t let you track your pet anywhere in the world. You have to be within 1 mile distance from the GPS collar. That’s because the GPS collar communicates with the handheld base using regular radio waves as opposed to GSM networks.
The good thing about RoamEO is that both the handheld receiver and the collar are equipped with GPS receivers. This means that if you are on a hike, you don’t continuously have to re-create a virtual fence every step you take. It will still make sure your pets are within a predetermined distance from you. Also if you are interested in keeping your dog inside your backyard you can just walk around the perimeter and setup a virtual fence that way.
The only problem with this pet GPS tracking system is its price. The handheld unit and one collar will set you back $500 and for every additional collar you can expect to pay another $160… via

The only problem with this is that if dogs are stolen they will clearly see what it is and take it straight of which then becomes useless. something needs to be invented almost like the micro chip which is inserted into the skin and can still be tracked. dog theft is becoming a serious issue in the UK and needs to be stopped.

I have a puppy that is frightened of unusual noises and bolts into the woods surrounding our house, then hides in the wilderness until I come get her. I need something that tells me at least which direction she went and if I am getting closer or further from her.

I bought one for each of my kids and it works great; however, it drives them crazy when it is on their necks. They get out practically every day and the tracker shows me their exact location. It’s nice to know where you kids are 24 7! Jeesh I can’t believe people think im so parinoid…
