topcon GR3 gps receiver gets design award

Designed by WhipSaw for Topcon, this ultra sensitive GPS receiver is used by surveyors to correctly locate a position down to one millimeter, by tracking up to 36 satellites simultaneously. It has many design advantages such as the two battery packs that nest into an I-beam shaped magnesium chassis. The batteries also provide a handle while keeping the center of gravity as close to the pole as possible. The top is made square so it won’t roll when leaned against a wall. So simple yet useful. GR3 is completely waterproof to withstand extreme weather conditions. The top bumper overlaps the base so rainwater runs off the unit keeping the handle and the controls dry.

GR-3 just recently won the International Forum (IF) Product Design Award 2007, a prestigious German design award.
