SD GPS logger with 49 hours battery life
Published on March 8th, 2007 in gps navigation, hacks, tracking
This small SD GPS logger can manage to record your location for up to 49 hours on a rechargeable 3.6V lithium ion battery. Manufactured by what seems to be a one person company, this device uses a SiRF Star III GPS receiver, and comes with an 128MB SD card.
Well I have finally implemented all of the power management modes that I could think of to make this a truly unique product. Initial testing has shown that run times just over 49 hours can be achieved at 0 second recording intervals; that is a 39 hour increase over previous designs! Longer run times are easily realized by setting the sampling intervals to values between 0 65535 seconds. From 1-59 seconds the uProcessor will be put into a low power sleep mode to conserve power. Sampling intervals greater than 60 seconds will shut down both the GPS and SD card.
The SD GPS Logger will cost you $150.

I think it would be even better without the SD Card, since I have plenty of them at home in larger capacities. If it would have an external power suppy that could be charged via a 12V car adapter I would not care to much about the battery life, although this long battery life is good for tracking a hike…
