What we referred to as Asus Pegasus back in January now is officially Asus P526. The P526 is a quad band mobile phone with integrated GPS and 2MP camera.
This thin (15.4mm) and light (115g) GPS integrated mobile phone provides Quad-band GMS/GPRS/EDGE support for global roaming, and numeric keys and wheel for easy operation. With its high quality picture viewing (640 x 480) and 2M-Pixel camera with camcorder function, the P526 provides superb visuals for the user. The P526’s 2.6″ TFT (Touchscreen) display provides 65,536 colors at 240×320 pixels resolution. This mobile wonder also comes with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.0.

I bought one at USD$430 in Taipei a month ago. I bought it for it’s quad band GSM, Chinese character recognition software and GPS. Wi-Fi or 3G wasn’t a factor. It’s a great device for international travelers when both unlocked phone and GPS are all in one device. It came loaded with TomTom Navigator 6 with Taiwan map. I’ve also purchased USA & Canada map a couple of weeks ago and it loaded fine. I can write in MS Word compatible files while flying across the Pacific. No need to get the laptop out anymore. Once arrived into LAX, California map is only a few strokes away. I don’t know if the RAM will be enough for future programs. I do have a 2GB micro SD installed right now for the data and music files. Oh, yes it has a camera that I don’t use it often. I saw a lot of negative reviews on this device because it lacks 3G & Wi-Fi. I don’t think it’s a big deficiency.
PROS: Quad band unlocked GSM phone with GPS. Small size. Decent battery life. Character recognition software. MS Word, Excel & Powe Point included.
CONS: The Microsoft Mobile operating system. I am quite disappointed with this OS. But it’s MS, what can you do? I like the PALM synch program better. Address book not fully integrated with the navigation software. Speaker is not loud enough for the navigation software.
