WorldNav 3100 TeleType review

WorldNav 3100 from TeleType just got reviewed by PCMag, and their meticulous editors failed to see its cunning resemblence to the Voya 320 they reviewed a day earlier. Anyhow, the WorldNav 3100 costs $400 ($100 more than Voya 320) and gets half a star less in the review.

The WorldNav 3100 TeleType has a premium version ($400 on Amazon) you’ll get text-to-speech function and a large POI (Points of Interest) database. The Premium version, ships with a 2GB storage card, and has 12 million POIs.

The reviewers was not impressed with multimedia capabilities as usual, but they’re not to blame:

The 3100’s movie viewer supports a number of video formats, including AVI, WMV, MOV, MP4, and MPG. Playback, however, was not smooth on my original review unit, which was equipped with 120X memory, where “X” equals 150 Kbps. It reported “out of memory” when I tried to view any large JPG files. Fortunately, a replacement device with the 3.08 firmware upgrade and 150X memory fixed this problem. It was able to display the JPGs properly, though it took about 25 to 27 seconds to open the big 3MB-plus size files, and I did experience a buffer-size error when I tried to play back a MPG file.

The Word Nav 3100 is junk. We purchased one 6/22/07 and on 7/29/07 it died. The company sent me a replacement because it was more than 30 days. It cost me $8 to ship the junk back. On August 6 we received the new unit. On Aug 22 it also died. When contacting the “techioes” they blamed my 110 outlet. They refused refund, were rude, hard to reach and charged me a 15% restocking fee. Glad to rid of it. DO NOT BUY!!!!

I love WorldNav. The navigation portion is very pricese and voice announcing the name of the street is very nice. The battery on my hiking trip lasted over 6 hours. I called teletype and asked them how to prolong the life of the unit and they told me to lower brightness of the screen. The support is via 1-800 is different then other companies. Technical support and customer service is answered by people that know the product. I also think that Yellow Pages of the unit with 12 million points of interest is the biggest I ever seen. I navigated to my new dentist via the phone number. You can actually drive toward a phone number.

I bought the WorldNAv 3100 premium because these folks are based in Boston and close to my home. I ordered it online and picked it up at thier office. My first unit had a glitch and wouldn’t work in Rhode Island, so they swapped it for me, no problem. Later on a trip to Canada I found out the unit wouldn’t work north of the border as promised. Once again a trip to their office, and they swapped the plug in card with the maps, no charge. While it would have been better if their were no problems, I have to say they were polite, and stood behind their product. I plan to buy a second one for my girlfriend. Excellent speach to text, great data base, I navigated 2200 miles by the phone numbers in my destinations. I’m sold.

WorldNav version 5 is working very well for me. Traveled from Indiana to Florida. Did not have a glitch. I think I will consider purchasing another one for my husband when they run a special again.

No one has said if the World Nav is truck friendly and does it really work with
low bridges, restricted roads, over weight bridges. etc.

    NOT impressed.

Had for about a year. Unit often takes up to 1/2 hour to acquire signal, on clear days! Loses signal often. Barely use it and volume switch no longer works. Father and brother have a Garmin, albeit more expensive, that shames this unit. Will be getting a Garmin ASAP.
