Taiwanese motherboard maker FIC will soon be entering the smartphone market with a new model called the FIC-GTA001. The new phone plans to bring a standard to the MP3 support, GPS systems and GSM areas.

The hardware specs are not very clear but sound very promising:

  • 2.8-inch 480×640 TFT display
  • Touch panel with multi-touch gesture recognition
  • Mesh file sharing over USB
  • Full GSM features (e.g. calling & SMS)
  • GPS suitable for both in-car and on-foot use
  • Dedicated emergency paging button
  • iPod-quality mp3 player

The software on the new FIC GTA001 will of course be open source and the community will be a great source for lots of functionalities. One of the planned software is the capability to capture hand gestures for controlling the device. This would allow you to for example zoom into a map using a pinching motion and pan by twisting fingers around as if holding a compass while using the GPS navigation software on board.

The new FIC GTA001 will use Samsung S3C2410 ARM9-based processor, with 128MB of RAM and 64MB of flash memory
