Google Maps on your Treo

treo-google-maps-412.pngAs if you were not swamped with all the new Google services being announced all over the blogosphere here is Navigadget’s contribution. Google just added the Palm Treo to the list of supported devices. Now you can take Google Maps with you on your Treo 680, 700p, 650 and 600 (are there any other Treo’s anyways?)

Spoiled engineers at Google have been busy adding some amazing features such as real-time traffic conditions for over 30 major US metropolitan areas, ability to save your favorite places and routes, support for Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and a KB meter to keep track of how much data you’ve downloaded to keep your phone bill in line.

Now all you have to figure out is how to interface this Google Maps with your bluetooth GPS receiver to end up with a complete navigation system, complete with real time traffic info.

If you are a Treo owner please let us know how this works. Some live pics would be nice too.

While on a trip this weekend to St. Louis I needed some directions and needed to find a location.

I downloaded Google Maps for Mobile on my Treo 650 and have the following to say:

    1. If your data connection isn’t Edge/GPRS or better, don’t bother. It takes for ever to get maps, even on a 3G connection.
    2. It’s cumbersome to use and can’t be recommended for driving.
    3. NO GPS integration, at least on my Treo 650 with a GlobalSat Bluetooth GPS receiver, it won’t even tell you your position.
    4. Only a basic routing capability. And I mean really basic, it only shows you a line on a map.

I would be willing to wait for map loads, and suffer the potential slow connections, if it would integrate GPS, but I removed it from my Treo minutes after installing it due to the complicated nature and lack of GPS.

Tried it on my Treo 680, it provides basic navigation, good in finding location it even found my address which is usually found only in newer maps.

Map loading with Treo 680 is fast, just make sure you have sufficient power source.
