Sony PSP GPS more real than ever

We have the latest pics of the PSP GPS navigation system! We had some other posts about this latest GPS add on last month (psp gps) but nothing this real.

The navigation system is called MAPLUS and it is expected to hit the stores in December. You can either update your maps from the web Kotaku says (not sure how you’d go about doing that) or you just simply put it on a memory stick.

Like we mentioned before GPS utility can also be used in certain games:

The GPS attachment will also be used for games, including the upcoming golf title Everybody’s Golf Course, a spin off of the Minna no Golf series. Using real world golf courses, the GPS functions can be used during your real life golf game to give you location feedback while on the links.

Metal Gear Portable Ops will also take advantage of the GPS attachment to give you location specific maps. This new gameplay mode will require you to go to specific locations to interact with enemies.

I live here in Japan in the military and I have this MAPLUS and it cost about 90 bucks with the GPS receiver and UMD. Its one of the best things I’ve ever purchase for my PSP. I hope it makes it to the states but I wouldnt hold my breath. It works great as far as I’m concerned. Once you figure out the basics with someone who reads japanese its really easy to use.

You can contact me at fewill@msa.attmil.ne.jp if you have any questions

The guy who lives in Japan is right, it costs about $90 US (about $100 CAD). You attach the port to your PSP and it’s useful for trips and stuff. The PSP is basically an all in one now. Homebrew software makes it an alarm clock, calculator, Windows browser, and the new Homebrew converter thingy lets you download DVDs (and VCDs and CDs) into PSP playable firmware. Of course many will think that impossible after the patch for homebrew execution by Sony, but you can get it moded. For hacking and homebrew newbies, every console (PlayStations, Xboxes,) has a special system that makes it unable to play copied, non-genuine discs. For example, let’s say all real discs for the PS2 manufactured by Sony have a special code in it, we can call this the “Boot X”. The PS2 will find the Boot X on the disc before loading it. When you fix your PS2 in a special way (moded or modded, I don’t know how to spell it), it will no longer look for the Boot X and will play anything copied as well as real. In the case of the PSP, you can change it so it plays copied games, runs homebrew software, and Sony Firmware. Downloading homebrew will cancel your warranty and guarantee of quality, because you haven’t been using Sony Firmware. In reality homebrew doesn’t damage you PSP in anyway. To avoid this, you can flash your PSP again, to remove all homebrew from the PSP, and activate your hidden software gain after re-flashing it.

I meant, “To make sure you don’t lose your warranty and guarantee of quality flash your PSP”

That does look very cool, but you have to ask yourself what the point is now that we have mobile phones with great GPS installed, especially as the new Garmin phone should be out soon.
