iPod GPS navigation system
Oct 2, 2006 gps navigation, misc news

As if you were not exposed to enough iPod fakes, now comes this from Navigadget. The iPod GPS navigation system!!! This was sent to us by one of our readers who is probably a freelance graphic designer and doesn’t have much work these days :)
Now this was the kinda thing we would expect Steve Jobs to reveal on last month’s Apple event. A really cool GPS navigation system, not a freakin iTV!
But anyhow, we’ll go with the flow and reveal(!) the long awaited specs on the new iPod GPS navigation system:
- 80 GB storage
- touch screen
- audio and video player
- bluetooth phone integration
- SiRF StarIII GPS receiver chip
- text to speech engine
- integrated speakers for voice guidance (we’re guessing that’s on the back)
- 3D map viewing functionality
- nearest Apple Store function

Nice…
BUT I don’t think Apple would have used the Function Key labels – not like them at all in a graphical interface. Also think that they would have been more colorful with those icons on the right.

How true is this? I know that photo is a mere rendering but I like the idea. Is there anything like this in the works. I would definately buy it if it’s priced right the the screen size is big enough. Very cool product!

I use my iPod mostly in my car so a GPS-enabled iPod would be welcomed — or even one that could link to my onboard factory-installed GPS. I spend a lot of time on the road and it’s amazing how my iPod seems to know where I am by selecting a tune that is appropriate to my locale. I’ve crossed the stateline into Alabama while listening to “Sweet Home Alabama” and crossed the Ohio River into Indiana listening to “Back Home Again In Indiana.” It’s freaky when it happens and makes me think that maybe there’s a little GPS in there already. Once GPS-enabled iPods become prolific, iTunes could tag songs according to their geographic attributes and a user could select “Road Trip” mode that would play an appropriate song (if available) from your music library.
The possibilities are intriguing.

This looks a lot like the new iPhone. Perhaps one could plug in an external GPS device and the phone would be what is pictured above.

I love this idea. Who needs the iTv. iTv is a smaller idiot box. Is anyone still interested in exploring the world outside the box? No way is Steve Jobs watching iTv. Hummm… Tell me that Steve Jobs is not a Tv head… I need the iPod with GPS to be waterproof. Or a case… But, can we open up the iPod so that one can change the insides… battery… memory… oh, it’s a closed system… well, I’ll leave my comments here just in case someone from MS is doing some research. Hey Bill, open it up and compete with Apple. Skip the Tv. Or not… Whatever… Just make sure that there is wireless internet connection, okay? How small can you make a satellite dish, Bill? The transfer rate is getting faster. Typing is faster than voice. Even with the speech recognition improvements, typing is still faster and remains the clearest form of communication. The kids are learning to type now in school on the PCs. Just need that 29 cm x 12 cm keyboard to have access. Optional… Those with the intelligence are now writing on a keyboard and not chit chatting on the phone. Big rebellion of the cell phone blah blah blah coming… Might be a social class division. Just saying… Memory… Review. Study. Write. Read. Face to face communication is great, but the phone is with a drain. So, what about the books on iPod? They are great when they are read by the author. Okay, poof. I’m gone. Thanks for the collection of thinking here. SWAK !

If Apple doesn’t evolve to a GPS ipod someone else will. Just like the GPS companies coming out with a GPS phone. Companies are afraid to compete with other product lines they market, Apple doesn’t have this problem with a GPS. I would think the next step in the wireless ipod is to enable internet phone useage, but again they would rob sales of the iphone. Well, if they don’t do it someone else will. The combination of all these devices into one is probably inevitable. The reason for the probably is nothing is a sure thing and I have been wrong before. I hope Apple hasn’t lost their inovation.

GPS iPhone would open a huge industry for location based information services.

If Apple decides to do an iPod/GPS merger, it will take one of two forms -
1) A partnership,
2) A complete, end to end Apple product.
A partnership is likely only if Apple can get an International GPS electronics and service provider to overhaul their entire system to work with how Apple thinks the devices should work. Unlikely.
Far more likely is something like Apple’s implementation of Google Maps and cell tower triangulation on the iPhone. With a GPS dongle for the iPhone and iPod Touch, the iPod devices would be able to record locational metadata and share that data with the underlying iPhone data structure. For instance, Tasks and To Do’s. Imagine being able to tag your tasks with GPS meta data. Have a shopping list for a store across town that you rarely ever go to, and don’t plan on making a special trip out there just for that… Program it into you iPod, and when you near the store, it will ping you and bring your attention to the task. And while it can use cell tower triangulation for this, GPS can give it an additional level of accuracy.
GPS metadata can also be useful for time optimization. Imagine having an application on your iPhone or iPod touch that will, on your command, start tracking your daily routine. Define your “regions” by task, and you’ll be able to view the results at the end of the week. How many hours per day did you spend at the office? At the park? Eating out? At the mall? At the bar? At home?
GPS used to be for geeks, and then for Extreme Sports nuts, and now it is becoming a common, everyday convenience for tech savvy families. Today’s GPS market is much like the MP3 market back when Apple came out with the iPod. They weren’t first, but they examined the mistakes of all the others and just built something that worked better.
I’m hopeful.
