automatic geotagging with your camera
Sep 26, 2006 gps navigation, hacks, tracking

Jelbert just introduced a new fully automatic method for geotagging your photographs. They claim to be a bit different the rest since this new -esthetically not so pleasing- device not only tracks your exact location but also the direction you are facing. Oh, also the exact time. And then using a third party software (sold seperately) you can stitch all those pictures together with their timestamps. It is designed to fit into the flash slot on your camera, but from what we understand it works independently from the camera. If the there’s no flash support on your tiny digital camera, no worries, you can just use the manual trigger everytime you take a picture (which kinda defeats the purpose)
Before we forget, you also need a purchase Garmin Geko 301 and fit it right on top of your Jelbert Geotagger.
Here are the full features:
- Records longitude, latitude and compass direction of each photograph taken.
- Data is stored in easy to read JTR format.
- Supports low cost SD FLASH memory cards for data storage.
- Secure camera flash shoe mount for ease of use and accurate camera direction reading.
- Automatic activation trigger from camera shoe for convenient capture of location information.
- Standard 3mm flash socket provided for external flash gun.
- GeoLock feature to allow full creative photography whilst still preserving accurate location and compass direction integrity.
- Works with both digital and film SLR cameras with flash shoe and have time stamping capability.
- Manual trigger button to support non flash shoe compatible cameras.
- Supports the popular Garmin Geko 301 GPS receiver to determine location (not supplied).
- Super-bright indicator LEDs for reliable out-door viewing
- Built-in sounder for audible indication of activity.
- Sound-off mode for more discrete operation.
- Powered by a standard 9 volt PP3 battery for easy replacement whilst in the field.
- Compact size measuring only 90mm by 65mm by 21mm (excluding the GPS unit).
Now let’s look at this again: You need a camera with a flash shoe, purchase 3rd party software, have a seperate battery for the device, and purchase a Garmin Geko 301. Doesn’t sound very streamlined and cost effective to us. The Jelbert Geotagger costs £149.
