Sony PSP GPS navigation system software unveiled
Published on September 25th, 2006 in gps navigation, software, sony
About a month ago we announced the arrival of the GPS add-on hardware for Sony PSP. And if you read the article you’d know that there was no known software for GPS navigation. As it turns out a company called “Edia” will be the first to make use of this add-on GPS hardware on the PSP. The car-navigation software will have maps of Japan and will even have POI capabilities.
There’s a good chance it won’t make it to North America so soon but the Japanese will be able to get this as soon as December this year. The GPS hardware alone will cost about $50.

I have the GPS downloaded the software and can’t figure out how to get the GPS to work. It is a real pain in the ass to get the software to work right. If some computer software got a dummy’s guide to install software to the PSP from a labtop send me an email. I do mean dummy’s guide.

Hey i got the GPS hardware and its pretty much the sickest thing, you have to go through alot though to get it to work, i bought mine about a few weeks ago from hong kong and you pretty much need a PSP with 1.50 firmware and update it to 3.52 m33 custom firmware and install mapthis on the psp using the memory stick its actually pretty easy just go on youtube and search for it… i had to buy another psp since u cant downgrade anything above 3.50 but it was so worth it
September 7th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
WELL YOU CAN DOWNGRADE TO 1.50 USING SOME HACKS IN THIS WEBSITE, ALSO THERE ARE TIPS TO GET THE GPS THING WORKING.
DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK…

After buying GPS-290 on play-asia.com and installing this software, I downloaded the maps for my region.
Now I enjoy every day usage of using it! It’s an awesome piece of software and hardware!

Benrarick -
Do u need to install any 3rd party software (homebrew firmware) for the GPS to work?
Is your PSP brand new?
I have a first generation PSP (bought in 2005) and the new PSP 290 GPS receiver with firmware 3.90, I can’t seem to get it working.
I research online enough to know things about homebrew, mapthis 5.2 etc. But I m hoping to use official sony firmware (3.9 is the latest) to get GPS working.
If you can answer my questions, that will help me determine if I need to buy a new PSP unit or not.
Thx.

March 7th, 2008 at 12:21 am
I pretty much have the same question as Roy.
I have one PSP slim with a 3.90 firmware and will it be possible to work the GPS with the official firmware rather than a homebrew. I have the PSP 290 GPS receiver already.
Thanx
March 26th, 2008 at 5:58 am
no. mapthis is a homebrew application. needs custom firmware. I run mapthis with a phat 3.90 m33-2. Perfectly.
