pocket size GPS personal tracker
Published on September 1st, 2006 in gps navigation, tracking
The AS-19B is a pocket sized tracking device that utilizes both GPS satellites and GSM networks. It is manufactured by APM Co. in Taiwan. The device has an integrated SiRF StarIII receiver chipset so you don’t need to plug-in an external antenna and it works with Li-Ion batteries but you can also plug it into the battery of cars and yachts using the 12V DC cigarette lighter. If you go with the backup battery option AS-19B can go as long as 70 hours.
The basic principle of the device is to receive location info through the GPS module and transmit this data to a predetermined location using GSM networks. The AS-19B transmits this data in the industry standard NMEA 0183 format to its built-in three sets of phone numbers as a regular report every 2 - 120 minutes. Since AS-19B is equipped with a SIM card containing independent phone number, watchers can thus monitor the device by direct phone dialing. AS-19B can distinguish a caller’s ID, and the device can decide whether to send SMS messages containing the ID and position information back to the authentic caller.
Another built-in function is the panic mode. Owner of the device can press a button in case of an emergency and the device will immediately send its location to a predetermined phone number as well as a 95 decibel alarm that will buzz for help.

ONE MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE AS-19B. There is NO LCD screen not even a small one like on the old pagers to show your current GPS waypoint location. For the price this unit should have been included an LCD!!! The point being if for example a person had this on there person and needed to pass the GPS location off to other personal such as via HAM radio or two way business band radio one could read the off the location waypoint. Any GPS unit that doesn’t show the the current location via a simple LCD screen is greatly flawed in my professional opinion and not worth serious consideration! If you want to make a survalance model with out the LCD for lawenforcement then by all means market it as an optional model to the market.
