iTrac vehicle tracking
Aug 29, 2006 gps navigation, tracking
If you have been one of our readers for a while then you know we’re really into GPS tracking of anything, be it your car, dog, backpack, girlfriend, etc.. Today we’re talking about iTrac; a hardware and software combo for tracking your expensive sports car or your 18-wheeler fleet.
itrac is a solid complete vehicle tracking solution. It collects info using it is on-board GPS chip and transmits the data via cellular networks. Just like most other tracking systems itrac is also capable of sending reports via SMS. But itrack also is capable of receiving commands via specially formatted SMS messages so you can set different parameters regarding tracking of the vehicle. SMS is also used when GPRS communication is not available.
A SIM card is required for each unit and it can be from any GSM network company. The built in GPS modules receive the satellite signals and then transmit the data through the GSM network through to a control center or a mobile receiver in the form of SMS or email via GPRS. The data is transmitted using the industry standard NMEA format containing the longitude / latitude / time / speed… etc. Of course you’ll need a data plan from your network provider for additional costs.
iTrac has a very easy to use software interface which connects to the device using RS232. Using the included software you can set real time tracking parameters such as tracking intervals, logging interval, send email settings, and much more.
There are several logging options with iTrac:
- Journey Start Logging – log journey start
- General Location Logging – log moving locations
- Journey End Logging – log journey end
- Unit Idle Time Logging – a log idle time
There’s also an “alarming” function where a user can be notified if certain limits are reached for the following criteria:
- Journey start/end
- Over speed
- Panic
- Towing
- GEO-Fence
- immobilizing
