Sony PSP hack as a real time map viewer with GPS

When we posted an article about how to connect GPS receiver to PSP we knew we were really close to seeing Playstation’s on our dashboards for navigating. Well, it has finally happened. But keep in mind this is still experimental with a few bugs and requires a high level of geekness to get it to work. If you think you are up for it you can find all the necessary code, maps, etc on Deniska’s site. There’s even a video showing this GPS map viewer for PSP in action.
Here are some of the main features:
- Scroll through maps up to 65536×65536 pixels
- Zoom in and out
- Large coverage obtained by using imagery from Google Maps
- Customizable map size, level of detail and coverage.
- Ability to display zipped maps (currently buggy)
- Ability to display satellite and hybrid maps from Google.
- Wi-Fi map retrieval: ability to acquire and store map data to memory stick over Wi-Fi
- Linux/Cygwin script is also provided to generate a map of given size and detail for a given location.
- GPS support: ability to read and interpret NMEA sentences from a GPS receiver communicating through PSP’s serial port.
In GPS mode there are following features:
- Speed, direction, altitude, latitude, longitude, number of satellites in view.
- NORTH UP mode: map is displayed with NORTH always on top.
- TRACK UP mode: map rotates so that direction of movement is always from top down.
- Record GPS data (captures NMEA sentences in gps.txt file for later replay)
- POI/Attractions data support. Ability to select and display different types of attractions.
- PSPSDK compatible source code provided.
Some of these features (such as Wi-Fi map retrieval) don’t even exist on today’s most popular / advanced navigation systems. Great work!
