Canadian Nextar MN2707 GPS navigation system
Aug 18, 2006 gps navigation

Some online communities have been talking about the Canadian Nextar MN2707 which apparently is on sale right now for 400CAD (356 USD) and sold-out almost everywhere. That’s a really good price considering the MN2707 boasts a huge 7″ screen and a 30GB hard drive. Unlike older models MN2707 comes with a SiRF Star III GPS receiver chipset. Another improvement in this model is the placement of the receiver which is now more sensitive.
Some people on these forums weren’t happy with the software complaining about it not narrowing down matching addresses as you type (no auto complete) but they say at least the new version provides automatic re-routing in case you take a wrong exit.
Here are the features from Canadian Tire:
- Large 7″ touch sensitive colour screen (800×480 pixel resolution)
- Detailed street level Canadian mapping & major US highways (expandable to include detailed US mapping)
- USB 2.0 and USB host ports
- Turn-by-turn voice prompting
- Two million pre-loaded points of interest
- Automatic routing to your destination Easy-to-use suction cup mount
- 30 GB internal hard drive
- Navteq mapping
- Hard drive allows for MP3 playback (with built-in speakers) and jpeg viewing

I just bought one of these things but I’m having a terrable time making it work. I can punch in a street in the city of Thunder Bay Ontario and the stupid thing gives me similar street names but only from bordering US States. Nothing from anywhere in Canada. This is very frustrating and the Nextar website doesn’t give any decent information. Can I download a Canadian map that will give me streets and addresses in Canada? If I knew I was going to have this much difficulty I wouldn’t have bought it.

I Finally figured the machine out, through no help from Nextar. Some of us live in areas that are not on the base map of Canada the machine does not provide a Canadian backgtound map so you can only pick up US addresses. You must be within 200 metres or so from a road that is on the Canadian map before the machine reads Canadian material. then you can put in destination points and the like. I can’t sit in my yard and type in destination points because my yard and road to my place are not on the Canadian base map. I must drive 1 K to Rossport in ordere to enter usable data.

Where can I get a US maps oin Ontario? Canadian Tire stors I’ve tried don’t have any
December 29th, 2006 at 7:18 am
I just bought the US maps CD for 29.95 at Canadian Tire. It did take approx. 60 min. to upload it into the MN2707 but the CD also comes with an upgrade to your unit which is great. I have been testing it for several weeks and all I have to say is that it works GREAT!

I just got an MN2707, I have a hard time getting GPS Signal. It would take at least 5 to 10 minute to have signal to make it work.
December 30th, 2006 at 8:35 am
You appear to be among the minority when it comes to praise for this GPS system.
I`m seriously considering a GPS of some make or other but the only one I`ve been exposed to first hand is a Garmin Nuvi 350.
This was in a friends van in which I accompanied him to Florida very recently.
It worked beautifully but my senior eyes would require something somewhat larger than the 3.5″ screen which it had.
Also does the voice prompt turns by saying the steet name or just the distance to the turn?
Any help you could give me would I assure you be very much appreciated.
Thanks

having trouble (not acquiring gps signal). What do i do? Is it
broken? I am in new Brunswickand it shows the Onario map.
January 3rd, 2007 at 3:31 pm
I bought an MN2707 from Canadian Tire and it would not acquire a GPS signal and would not let me input a street address at all. I exchanged it only to have the new one do the same. After contacting Nextar in California after both times, I was told that they were defective and would have to exchange it (twice). The third time I opened the box at the store to see if it would work and after trying it it worked fine. Only thing is when I try to input a POI (ex. a hospital) nothing is found matching. Wondering if this is also a problem with this unit. Other than that I am hapyy with the unit so far.

I am having problems getting my MP3 part of it to work. I put songs on it and it will not go to them. Everytime I try to go to it, a screen comes up saying system scanning. It will then not go any farther than that. What can I do? It almost seems to freeze or something like that.

I bought the Nextar P7 on eBay and was shipped the Nextar MN2707 instead. I just found out that I cannot use it in California. If somebody in Canada has a Nextar P7 (which has the detailed US Maps included) I am willing to make a trade. This unit is just like new. I cannot get any help from Nextar in getting the US Maps CD. Email me at Candelari@gmail.com Thanks.

This nextar gps mn2707 unit is a total PILE OF CRAP. It takes forever to find your location upon startup, and it constantly loses the signal and then takes another hundred years finding it again. Some well known streets it cant find and will come up as “error”, and most of all, with the mp3 player and 40GB hard drive (only 20GB accessible to you), it doesn’t support playing mp3’s in folders off the route directory!!!????!!?! Does nextar expect you to put 2500 songs all mixed up in the root and take hours searching for the mp3 you want? Furthermore, it doesn’t have repeat, random, fast forward, rewind functions. I called Nextar customer service, and all you talk to is MORONS who’s answer to all techincal questions is DUUUUUHUHHHHHHHH. This thing is the most useless electronic piece of equipment I have ever tried to operate, and will be happy as hell to get my $550 back from Crapy Tire. F*^K you Nextar for wasting a full day of my time with your WORTHLESS asswipe product.

My unit is nearly a year old, was working fine till the other day it froze up on a map screen. I turned it off and back on only to find now I can’t use the touch screen to ok the disclaimer. It seems as if the touch screen has failed. Has this happened to any one else.
Help!
Thanks Jason.

I s there a reset button on this thing. Mine froze and I can’t do anything with it. During start-up it freezes and displays……”it is important that digital map and PO”…….I’ve puched every button, started up, shut off many many times but it will not get past that display.
Thanks in advance

after a year of good service, my mn2700 crashed. Called Nextar in California, bit of a runaround, finally got a helpful representative who told me what to do. Unit had to be sent to a Canadian middleman (probably a customs broker) for shipment to Nextar. Took almost 2 months. They sent me a brand new one. I love the unit. It works well mostly. I think the unit is excellent, but the instruction book stinks. I had to learn a lot the hard way, and ask a friend who also had one. A more detailed rewrite of the instruction book would solve many of the problems others have complained about. The suction cup mount is not a very secure way of mounting the unit. Otherwise, I’m very happy with it, and would reccomend it to friends with the understanding that I’d have to translate the instructions into understandable English. Very good repair service.

Our MN2707 just did the same thing as G Rogers did. Anyone know why and anyone have a phone number for Nexstar or website? Tried to find www. nexstar.com and it’s gone. We got the unit as a gift and now Canadian Tire won’t take it back without one. Nice.
August 23rd, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Sorry meant to say Canadian Tire won’t take back without receipt. We got it as a gift.

I was able to find the Nextar web site above. I’ve been looking at one of these on Ebay but after hearing all these horror stories, I think I’ll go with the Garmin 330C, I know it works great I have 2 at work.

Frankly the only good thing about it is the screen size. When I power up the damn thing I get a hazy image. Nextar says it graphics that was incorrect in size and if I touch the bottom right it should go to the next stage. Sometimes it actually works. They figured as we are the gentle northerners they could con us out of our hard earned cash. I have made it my life object to tell every one not to buy them. The crap and way too big for a hokey puck.
Has anyone tried using other GPS software on this unit.
October 8th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
It worked ok until 1 month after warranty expiration, now it remains frozen in the startup mode. Nothing will reset it.
$400.00 to rent this thing for a year I guess. rats!
October 8th, 2007 at 5:36 pm
Brian.
You like many others, have a Fantastic GPS (for the price $349 at Canadian Tire), that is doing what it is programmed to do.
It is advising yiu to upgrade the firmware.
To continue just acknowledge the message by touching the bottom right hand corner of the screen, where the word “map” appears.
Your GPS will now start to load,as it used to.
If you want to get the upgrade, go to the Nextar website, or call 1-888-849-0846.
I did and it works really well, it took less than 5 mins.
Do NOT try and do it by the instructions on the web site, as you need to change the name of the file to update the FIRMWARE in order to transfer the upgrade to the GPS (If you are Computer literate you may try it on your own, If not be sure and ask for Michael,in the support group, he is extreemly patient and helpful.) He will fil you in with the necessary requirements.
There are a few sublle changes.( Screen colour changes to a nice Orange, and Voice prompts modifications —repetitave “You have reached your destination”—Try the upgrade… I am extreemly pleased with the results.
The service reps I talked to were very helpful, (Michael and Dion)
I understand the company is working on updating the map sometime, for release next year.
I used my camera patch cord, to transfer the file.. You can use a male to male UBS connection, or if you choose a flash card.
Good Luck
Harvey

We are finding that our GPS2707 is also freezing on the start up screen has anyone to this date found anthing to solve the problem. It’s driving us crazy. Got to love George Bush is screwing this up with daylight savings time. I wonder if this is part of the issue.
We spent $400. on this this and it dies after doing one trip down south. Man talk about expensive weekend trips.
Any feedback would be appreicated.
Sincerely,
November 22nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Sue.
There is a firmware fix for this problem.
Call 1-888-849-0846, Nextar suopport
or go to the website http://www.nextar.com
Read my note above dated 21 oct 2007
and you can fixt temporarily or permenently with the firmware patch.
Note to Pete,
Call Nextar at the number above, they may help you…
If you have the US map there is also a smal (init) patch to apply before
loading the US MAP003.
The 2707 then has improved prompts, and fixes the “you have reached your destion” Repetitive prompt.
HOWEVER, in Canada you need to know the county or township to access the street name, rather than by the big city name.
Hope this helps

I have a MN2707 with the US Maps installed. Firmware version is V3. My unit is still working OK and not experiencing any of the ‘Freezing’ problems mentioned above. I am a little hesitant to upgrade to the latest firmware release in case it screws up my machine.
Does anyone know what specific fixes / upgrades are included in the latest firmware release. Nextar’s site is seriously lacking in details related to what upgrades / fixes are included in firmware releases.

My MN2707 froze after 14 months of use. They replaced with a new one. BUT unfortunately the warrantee stays with original purchase date.
I used the new unit one time, second use (Next day) it froze again and Nextar tells me I am out of luck.
LAST Nextar item I ever purchase.

To those who are having problems with their MN2707 locking up, try this; When turned on, wait until it stops, put you finger on the lower right corner of the screen & hold lightly. This should turn it on.
I have had 2 of these units, I liked, but was not an easy unit to get proper directions. The first unit froze solid, & was replaced with a new one. Now this last one finally would not turn on with putting my finger on the screen. After having a big fight with Nextar, they now have another model in transit to me.
If purchasing a new GPS, it not be a Nexstar.
November 2nd, 2008 at 8:17 am
I love forums… I too was having the problem of the system freezing on that screen and voila… touching the lower right hand corner has got my system up and running again. We were using the gps on a long trip in the summer when this started happening. We bought a little handheld unit to complete our trip I thought that we would have to junk the Nextar gps, but I guess not. Now we have two. Thanks everyone.

I have been looking for some info about my nextar MN2707 purchased from Canadian Tire. Canadian Tire is of no help in locateing a company that sells accessories as my GPS was not picking up a signal and I thought if I bought a new antenna I would receive a signal. I really wanted my 7 inch screen GPS but it has turned out to be a fight from the start and Nextar support has been nil. I have called over twenty times to California and got the runaround each time if I got an answer at all. I thank everyone for their input and I will try the lower right corner (I hope it works)
November 15th, 2008 at 8:24 am
ditch it and buy another brand. These guys have very poor support.
they promised new maps. nothing.
they promised a fix for the Q: My MN2707 gets stuck on a screen that says “It is important that digital maps and PO”, but the rest is cut off. NOTHING.
you call them and they say the fix is coming. They have abandoned us so I say don’t give them another nickle.
November 23rd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Heh am i ever glad i found this forum. I own two Garmin c550s and have had absolutely no problems with of any sort. They do everything these Nextar piles of manure are supposed to do and more. But then what would you expect when you shop at Crappy Tire…P.S. Hey Harvey you should put your name in at Nextar as their Canadian Sales Rep LOL.

I DL 15 mp3 songs from limewire, then found i had to turn unit off and restart it, then songs appeared when i went into music, then highlighted song and clicked the play arrow and it played perfect, i then unclicked the random icon and it played songs randomly, I then FM cigarette lighter adapter at radio shack, and it plays wirelessly thru my car speaker system when set on a frequency that no fm radio station is on for much richer sound. by the way when the unit gives a voice directive it over rides the music clearly and then music continues to play as it was, I love my 7″ touch screen and music plays even when in map mode..

Where can I get a copy of any of your software? canadian and us maps
July 7th, 2009 at 7:12 am
I have had one of these for 3 years and agree that Nextar’s support is completely useless. If you go to their site, the 2707 is not there…. it’s in the discontinued products heap, which means that they are now “officially” not offering support.
Telephone calls and emails are responded to with promises of fixes which never happen.
I have been trying to get map updates for 3 years with no success and poking at the touch screen at startup to get past that freeze frame.
It’s very frustrating and it will be a long, long time before I buy anything else from these guys.

Same issues as stated above. I too, am looking for firmware updates for the mn2707. Anybody?
