Engadget has a decent review of the TomTom’s car kit for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. What they did was to use the iPhone 3GS with a regular car kit and let it use its own GPS receiver, and an iPhone 3G with the TomTom car kit.

The highly anticipated TomTom car kit for iPhone has finally made its appearance at the Apple Store. It is going to cost $120 and will ship in two to three weeks. Some of the mentioned features include secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, easy charging, hands free calling, and the ability to play music through cars’ audio via cable.

There’s a new review for TomTom’s GPS navigation app for the iPhone. It does not review the highly expected TomTom car kit though – only the software.
The review was mostly very positive. Here is the bottom line for you:

(UPDATE: Photo above updated) Toyota and TomTom have been working together in Europe as it can be seen with the Toyota Yaris SR, and just today they announced a partnership in Australia announcing a portable GPS navigation system that fits into your vehicle’s dashboard. It is called FollowMe navigation unit and it also takes care of the audio in your vehicle. When in portable mode the TomTom device can be used in other vehicles or even in pedestrian mode. FollowMe gets traffic updates from Suna Traffic Monitoring Services to help you battle with traffic, has bluetooth connectivity to pair up with your phone, and it can even read your text messages out loud. Now that’s a life saver. TomTom FollowMe has a 3.5″ screen, and it can even hook up to rear view camera if you opt-in.
FollowMe’s motorized tilting front panel can be adjusted up to 30 degrees to reduce sun glare, and hides the CD slot. You’ve got an optional iPod connection kit (costs extra) that brings your GUI to the dash, and if you remove your navigator you can still use all the other functions of FollowMe.
FollowMe – which really resembles an Eclipse AVN2210p by the way – uses a built-in gyroscope and accelerometer that calculates vehicle speed and direction, even in tunnels where satellite signals generally drop out… Read More …

As you may have already heard, the TomTom car kit for iPhone we’ve been talking about for months now has an official price. $120. This is obviously separate from the actual iPhone app which goes for $99. The new car kit will be compatible with iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS. Their short press release does not contain any other information and does not even mention iPod touch compatibility issues.

Navigon is getting ready to release a car kit for the iPhone with charging capabilities as we found out from their FB page. It says the car kit will be available in October this year. And it will only charge and hold your iPhone in place. Do not look for GPS receiver, speaker, microphone, bluetooth here. For those you may keep waiting for the TomTom car kit.
We don’t have any more details on Navigon’s iPhone car kit. We’ll let you know once we find out how much it will cost. We do however know how much Navigon’s iPhone App costs these days: $90.

We’ve been waiting for this car kit for a while now and we just got the word that the GPS navigation enhancing, iPhone charging, audio out supporting, microphone carrying, bluetooth connecting device will be out in October.

We’ve been following this TomTom car kit for a while now (such as here, here, here, and here). Well it looks like we’re almost at the end of the road. Just today TomTom car kit got its approval from FCC, meaning it is ready to come out in the U.S of A. very very soon.
If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, here is the run down: TomTom is getting ready to release this car kit for their iPhone GPS navigation app which should enhance users’ experience since the device contains its own GPS receiver, charges your iPhone, has bluetooth for hands free calls, and can use your car’s stereo for driving directions.

There’s a new video out about the TomTom car kit that we’ve been waiting for. As you already know the car kit is an optional hardware add-on to the TomTom GPS navigation app for the iPhone – however it should enhance your GPS navigation experience by a lot.
First off the car kit brings in its own GPS receiver – a GPS receiver better than the one in the iPhone. Secondly it includes a microphone and a speaker for hands free calling. Third, it lets you charge your phone as you’re driving, and fourth – it lets you stream your music to your car stereo.

Maybe you never got on the iPhone bandwagon – but got close to it by getting yourself an iPod Touch. We have some good news for you if you were looking into getting a GPS navigation system installed on your Touch. We got the word from TomTom’s public relations manager, Yann Lafargue, who said:
It will work with the iPod touch and will also work with third-party GPS applications.
So this confirms what we expected when we talked about TomTom’s Car Kit – which we think will cost about $193… Read More …
