You’re looking at the new ACER M900. Unlike X960 and DX900, Acer M900 boasts a full slide out QWERTY keyboard, and a large 3.8″ screen (even bigger than that Samsung Omnia HD)

ACER M900 runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and offers Outlook and Office. It supports 3.5 HSDPA connectivity, and the embedded fingerprint sensor puts your mind at ease about security issues.

Other features of the M900 include GPS, FM Radio, voice recorder and voice-command, as well as expandable memory, and a 5MP autofocus camera with flash.

Samsung Omnia HD with S-GPS and Xtragps?

samsung-omnia-hd
Samsung Omnia HD was just recently announced at MWC in Spain. We first met this device as Acme i8910 about a week ago. Omnia HD is quite spectacular with its 3.7″ AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) display, 720P HD video recording capability, 8MP camera, fast internet access of HSUPA 5.76Mbps and HSDPA 7.2Mbps, GPS with integrated compass which provides navigation with touch control and voice guidance via dual stereo speakers, up to 48GB of storage options, and some 3D games.

What caught our eye in their press release was this part:

GPS / S-GPS / Xtragps with Navigation

We got the GPS part, but what is S-GPS and Xtragps? Anyone?

next generation android phones

A lot of rumors are popping up around the internets about the new Android powered phones – all of which are of course GPS enabled. We’re happy to hear about these rumors as we would happily vote for T-Mobile’s G1 as the ‘fugliest’ high end phone if there was such a competition.

OK, here is the latest from the Android world:

Garmin: According to some sources Garmin’s highly anticipated nuviphone will keep its modified Linux OS but come second half of 2009 we can expect to see a few Android powered Garmin phones. If you remember Garmin earlier this month became a member of ‘open handset alliance’ which is the group behind the Android platform.

…We do have an Android-based phone under development; however, we are not releasing any additional information about that product at this time…

GPS? Of course. It is Garmin after all.

Sony Ericsson: Not much yet except this image of a concept device. See above. However there are some news about Sony Ericsson readying Android phones for summer of 2009. Considering Sony Ericsson also joined OHA this may have some truth to it.

HTC: The manufacturer of the original T-Mobile G1, HTC, is rumored to be working on G2, again for T-Mobile. It is said the new G2 will feature a full touch screen interface, have a trackball at the bottom, and be released as early as April.

Samsung: We just talked about the rumors about Samsung working on an Android phone. To summarize their new Android handset will resemble both Omnia and Instinct and will be available second quarter of 2009.

That’s all we’ve heard of so far. If you know of any other next-gen android phones do let us know.

UPDATE:
HKC: HKC Pearl is a new one.

Samsung Android phone for T-Mobile and Sprint

samsung-android
We knew we would hear about this sooner or later but we still got excited when we got the news that Samsung would be releasing an Android handset for T-Mobile and Samsung second quarter of 2009. If you’re like us you thought G1 was ugly and decided to hold off until a nicer Android phone came out. Well… now is the time (hang in there for another 4 – 5 months)

According to news there are about 80 Linux and Java experts on Samsung side working to make your dream phone come true.

We’re almost 100% positive that the new handset will offer GPS positioning as the news even mention that the device will feature “Google Maps based location information”.

Very few details have surfaced but it is said that the new Samsung Android phone will be full touchscreen and resemble Omnia and InstinctRead More …

verizon to unlock GPS feature

verizon-vz-navigator
Verizon – who’s been charging $10/month to provide door to door navigation – has decided to unlock the GPS feature on some of their devices starting early next year.

Here is what Steve Schwed of Verizon said:

…In the case of open standalone GPS, we are partnering with the Windows Mobile device manufacturers to provide a software upgrade that will add this capability to the existing assisted GPS capability. This is a complex development project to provide open standalone GPS while maintaining the assisted GPS capability with the level of performance and security that our customers expect. The recently introduced Windows Mobile devices including Omnia, Saga, and Touch Pro are targeted to add open standalone GPS in the 1st half of 2009.

Samsung Omnia i900 almost ready

Samsung Omnia i900 we mentioned recently is getting ready to be launched soon. No exact date has been confirmed yet but it will be available in early September as far as UK is concerned.

This UK site has a pretty interesting intro for their review of Omnia i900 which is worth a look:

Apparently the term Omnia means ‘Everything’ in Latin, and ‘Wish’ in Arabic, so the expectation associated to this new generation Samsung handset is pretty intense. Do we expect this handset to deliver on its foreign interpretation, or did somebody at Samsung get a new translator for Christmas? I’m sure we’ll find out pretty quickly.

By the time we had read through the ‘old testament’ style specification and features glossary, we were beginning to think we were on the verge of something special, an epiphany if you will…

You can also read another Samsung Omnia i900 review at this link and also see some live shots.

We had already listed the specs on Samsung Omnia here and here so we’re not going to do that again but we can’t help mention the integrated GPS receiver, 5MP camera, and the 3.5″ touch screen. We’re also trying to find out what kind of navigation software and maps will be used in Omnia i900 and if it’ll require a subscription. We’ll update this post once we find out.

Omnia i900 is expected to cost nothing to consumers provided they sign a new contract.
