dmedia WiMAX G5W GPS navigation system

gw5-dmedia
Ever seen a standalone GPS navigation system with WiMax connectivity? No? Neither have we (Clarion MIND, or Nokia N810 does not really count). Well, people at dmedia decided this was the future and designed one called G5W.

We’re not sure if this is still at prototype level or actually something you can pick up from a store in Hong Kong but here are the specs you can expect from dmedia G5W GPS navigation system:

  • 5″ wide touch screen
  • bluetooth connectivity
  • FM transmitter
  • GPRS/EDGE modules

Wouldn’t this be great if we had free WiMax coverage in our cities? Start a browser and bring up Google Maps with traffic information and maybe a few bookmarked traffic web cameras on our way and you can avoid traffic like no other.

gigabyte m528 – coming in September

Gigabyte M528 leaves Nokia N810 in the dust when it comes to processor speed and connectivity. Gigabyte M528 offers 3G connection and unlike Nokia it comes with a fast processor that runs at 800Mhz.

As far as memory you’ve got 512 MB of RAM and 4GB of flash. It also has a greater screen that measures 4.8″ but offers the same resolution; 800×480 pixels.

As we just mentioned the SIM card can do 3G with HSDPA in addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. Also it has a USB 2.0 port, microSD card reader and of course the GPS receiver. No word on what kind of software will accompany this awesome unification of hardware but we’ll be sure to get back to you when we find that out.

There are two cameras on Gigabyte M528, a 3MP one on the back and another one on the front for videoconferencing.

It is expected to be available as early as September 17 for 550 €… Read More …

Nokia N810

Nokia N810 that finally introduced a GPS into the mix was just made official with the WiMAX technology which is the wide-area high-speed mobile networks.

N810 is mainly an internet device that can allow for download speeds of up to 2-4 Mbps per user with peak download speeds of up to 10 Mbps. Unlike Wi-Fi which have a range of a few hundred feet, WiMAX networks consist of a number of interconnected base stations, each with a radius of up to 2-3 miles, that allow for handoffs from one base station to another as users move about a region or metro area.

In addition to the full featured web browser that takes full advantage of the large 4.13 inch touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a variety of popular web-based services are also supported such as:

  • Skype
  • Google Talk
  • Rhapsody
  • Gizmo5, with support for video calls thanks to built-in web cam

Why we like N810 so much here at Navigadget is of course because of the built-in GPS which can transform itself into a fully featured GPS navigation system. In addition N810 includes an integrated media player and 2 GB of internal memory, expandable to a full 10 GB of memory with the addition of an optional microSD memory card.

When not in range of a WiMAX network, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition can also access the Internet over Wi-Fi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology.

N810 should be available for U.S. customers where WiMAX connectivity is available as early as this summer and will cost $450.

Other features and specs include a 4.13″ display with 800×480 resolution, Wi-Fi, Mozilla based browser with Ajax and Adobe Flash 9 support, and memory that is expandable upto 10GB.

Nokia N810 will be available in mid November and cost about $480.
